Activities and discussions will further enhance participant learning.

Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be better able to:

  • Describe the intent and scope of the IFC.
  • Identify common fire hazards and understand how the IFC addresses correction or elimination of the hazards.
  • Identify how life safety and fire protection issues are addressed in building design and construction.
  • Identify how the IFC applies to maintenance of building design and components to maintain fire and life safety.
  • Identify how the IFC addresses hazardous materials.
Scott is president of KH Scott & Associates, LLC, and previously served for 30 years with the Kern County, Calif., Fire Department, where he held several positions before retiring as deputy chief.

Scott, who is the author of the book used for this course, spent 20 years with the Kern County Office of Fire Prevention and became involved in the development of building, fire and life safety codes in 1988. He served as chairman of the Southern California Fire Code Committee and later on the Board of Directors for the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers Association under the California Fire Chiefs Association. He spent four years as a member of the Uniform Fire Code Development Committee. He participated on the Drafting Committee of the International Fire Code, and then served on the Code Development Committee for the International Fire Code from 1998-2004 when he was elected to the International Code Council Board of Directors. He worked as a Senior Regional Manager for the Code Council until 2012, and has been a longtime instructor for ICC and the California State Fire Marshal's Office.

"Constantly changing processes and new technologies bring along new hazards and issues that need to be addressed," Scott said. "The 2015 IFC addresses new situations such as carbon-dioxide systems in the food and beverage industry, hydrogen gas generation and refueling devices, new concepts in egress and use of elevators, bio-diesel and ethanol-blended fuels, and continues to refine and clarify previous requirements such as fire sprinklers, fire alarms, water supply and access."
