The Code Council convenes first annual Global Connections Day.
 
Sustainable practices related to building codes, standards and climate change are addressed by industry leaders and experts.
 
 
More than 80 attendees, including multiple international delegations and representatives, convened on Oct. 19 at the first annual Global Connections Day sponsored by the ICC Family of Companies. Global Connections Day was held in conjunction with the ICC Annual Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

Featured speakers included Tim Ryan, CBO, city of Overland Park, Kan.; Stacey Paradis, executive director, Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance; Rebecca Laberenne, associate director, 100 Resilient Cities Program — Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation; and Tim Wentz, president, ASHRAE. Panelists during the morning Global Forum session included Wayne Trusty, Wayne B. Trusty & Associates; Ommid Saberi, World Bank; and Akira Ishii, city of Yokohama, Japan.

Presenters addressed the general theme of sustainable practices as they relate to building codes, standards and climate change. Specific areas of speaker and panelist focus included subjects such as resilience, disaster resilient communities, water usage and building analysis systems, including whole building analysis.

During the Global Awards Luncheon, Steve Mawn accepted the 2016 ICC Global Award on behalf of the Global Cooperation Department of ASTM International. The building departments of Clark County, Nev., and McKinney, Texas, were also recognized with awards for completing the accreditation requirements of the International Accreditation Service. Radhika Fox, chief executive officer of the U.S. Water Alliance, was the luncheon keynote speaker.

The afternoon sessions included the Global Membership Council Meeting and the ICC Chapters and country presentations with the activities reports from New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and Nigeria where members of the Global Membership Council are expanding the Code Council's global mission in building safety.
