Spring is in the air, which means the days of air conditioning are quickly approaching. Now is the time for homeowners to prepare their central air conditioning and heat pump units so they run efficiently. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) offers these tips to improve HVAC performance and minimize repair and energy costs:

  • Remove any leaves, grass and grass clippings, weeds, plants, and other debris from the outdoor condensing unit (the large metal box in your yard next to your home).
  • Clean your outdoor condensing unit occasionally by spraying it with a water hose — not a pressure washer, which may be damaging.
  • Check your air filter and change it if it is dirty, or according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Always turn off the power to the air handler before pulling out the filter.
  • Check the air vents inside your home so they are not blocked by furniture. Obstructed air flow makes air conditioners work harder.
"Heating and cooling accounts for a significant percent of the energy used in a home, so taking steps to ensure the efficient use of heating and cooling equipment can help reduce energy bills," said AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek. Establishing a service agreement with a reputable contractor can also be helpful. Find a technician certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE) online at www.natex.org.
