The California Building Standards Code, Title 24, serves as the basis for the design and construction of buildings in California and authorizes the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) to administer and publish California’s building codes every three years. Local jurisdictions are required to enforce the provisions of the Title 24 codes. The 2016 California Title 24 codes went into effect this year.

The International Code Council, in conjunction with the California Building Officials (CALBO) offers exams for certification in 10 categories of inspection and plans examiner, to include residential and commercial titles for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical inspectors, as well as the California Building Plans Examiner and the CALgreen Inspector/Plans examiner.

The ICC/CALBO Exam Development Committee (EDC) has been busy reviewing and updating all the exam questions to be compatible with the 2016 California codes as well as writing and validating new questions on the 2016 code changes. Starting in August 2017, these exams will be referenced to the 2016 California codes.

The job of updating and developing new exam questions is a task involving intense teamwork and many hours. Every three years, ICC's EDCs meet in person and hold additional web conference meetings throughout the year to maintain these certification exams. Exam Development Committees are the key to ensuring that the ICC certification program remains valid and robust.
