With summer heating up — along with swimming pool and spa activity — the Consumer Product Safety Commission's Pool Safely campaign seeks to raise visibility and educate the public about preventing drowning and entrapment incidents involving children.

Pool Safely, a national educational initiative, supports Section 1407 of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, which calls for the creation of an education and media campaign that serves as a call to action to prevent such horrific deaths of children.

"Nearly 400 swimming pool and spa drownings occur in the U.S. each year involving children younger than 15 years old," explained International Code Council Vice President of Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, and Swimming Pool and Spa Programs Misty Guard. "These troubling statistics were among the guiding principles in the development of the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code."

The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code is developed by the Code Council with the support of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals and encompasses the design, installation and inspection of aquatic facilities based on current American National Standards Institute standards technology and code provisions.

"Along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, we feel strongly about educating the public about protecting children from accidents that can be prevented through the adoption of safety codes and standards," Guard said. "The Pool Safely campaign combined with adoption of the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code illuminates practical steps we can all take to reinforce our children's safety around swimming pools and spas."
