After more than 25 years of service to the city of Maitland, Fla., ICC member Troy Smith turned in his flashlight and other tools as he retired as the city's building inspector on Aug. 11.

Smith is what they call a "combination inspector" in the building profession. He was responsible for inspecting the mechanical, plumbing and electrical aspects of buildings, making anywhere from 20 to 40 stops a day. He is also a state-certified fire inspector, a credential he earned while employed with the city. Before joining the city, Smith was a general contractor specializing in building structure. He worked as a building contractor since 1983.

Earlier this year, the Central Florida Chapter of the Building Officials Association of Florida recognized Smith's work and dedication with its "Inspector of the Year" award. When asked how he stayed in the same role and same place of employment for so long, Smith replied, it was "always the people."

Smith's retirement plans include "relaxing real hard for a while," and then visiting his son in Oklahoma and traveling to Greece to explore its rich history and ruins.
