The International Code Council (ICC) Community Service Award recognizes meritorious service to promote public health, safety and welfare. This year, the ICC awards nominating committee presented two awards. The second recipient of the ICC Community Service Award is the Building Department of the city of San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Building Department is well known for its innovative approach to community outreach and public education. From Building Safety Month events, to code adoption workshops and permit streamlining initiatives, the department strives to serve as a partner to the city. A shining example is the Small Business Ally team, which provides multi-lingual services at no cost to help small business owners.
"Like everyone in this room, we are providing a lot of service in our community," said Chief Building Official Chu Chang, who accepted the award on behalf of the city of San Jose along with Inspection Division Manager Bill Manye. "It is our honor to receive this award. Part of our everyday job is facilitating economic development, but we also believe that providing a safe and resilient community is our highest priority and our core function and responsibility as building professionals."
