Building Innovation 2018

The International Code Council (ICC) is sponsoring Building Innovation 2018, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Sixth Annual Conference and Expo. It will be held Jan. 8-11, 2018, at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, D.C. ICC and NIBS are long-time partners in the codes and standards arena as it pertains to the development and use of building sciences and technology. ICC has also participated in many leadership roles with NIBS, serving in numerous institute councils and committees and ICC members serving on the institute's board of directors.

Building Innovation 2018 will focus on approaches emphasizing this year's theme, "Sustain, Strengthen and Secure." Sara Yerkes, ICC senior vice president of government relations, and Cindy Davis, ICC board member and deputy director of the Division of Building and Fire Regulations for the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, will join James Ryan, code administrator for the city of Overland Park, Kan., on a panel about "Challenges and Opportunities in Regulating Existing Buildings."

The session will focus on the increasing number of abandoned buildings in the United States and the economic influence it has on communities. The speakers will discuss communities that are experiencing these effects and explain codes that were developed for existing buildings and how these existing buildings have successfully utilized these codes.
