Wyoming Conference of Building Officials fall conference

The Wyoming Conference of Building Officials (WCBO), a chapter of the International Code Council (ICC), held its fall conference in Casper, Wyo., from Nov. 1–3.

The conference commenced with business meetings of WCBO and the Wyoming Association of Fire Marshalls (WAFM). Pat Vandergriff of Vandergriff Code Consulting Services and an ICC instructor presented a seminar on the updates to the 2018 International Building Code and International Fire Code.

Jim Brown, deputy building official for the city of Gillette, Wyo., ICC board member and WCBO board member, served as the master of ceremonies during the annual banquet. Resigning WCBO President Keith Bowar was honored for terms served as president. Bowar is the chief building code official for Campbell County, Wyo., and he has served as the president of WCBO since 2009. He is also the recipient of the first-ever honorary membership to ICC Region II.

Ken Rogers, chief building official for the city of Gillette, Wyo., was sworn in as the new WCBO president. As he transfers power, Bowar's parting words of advice to Rogers were "Listen to your membership," as that is a core value of ICC. Bowar recognizes that the resolution of every issue will not always leave everyone happy, but "at least they know that you are willing to listen."

In reflection of the conference, Sara Yerkes, ICC senior vice president of government relations, said, "It is always a privilege to spend time with our members in Wyoming. I have a lot of admiration and respect for their dedication to the code administration profession and their loyalty to ICC. Many travel hours to join their colleagues at the WCBO meetings, so I know it takes commitment and leadership."

Additional ICC participants in attendance included Senior Government Relations Regional Manager David Nichols, ICC Board member David Spencer, CBO, ICC Region II Board President Jack Applegate and External Communications Manager Madison Neal.
