ICC member John Terry promoted to assistant director, division of codes and standards

Congratulations to International Code Council member John Terry on his promotion to assistant director of the Division of Codes and Standards for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs!

The Division of Codes and Standards establishes and enforces building codes, in partnership with the state's municipalities, to protect the health and safety of New Jersey residents. The division enforces the Hotel and Multiple Dwelling law; the Uniform Construction Code implementing the building, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, energy, mechanical, elevator, radon, asbestos, rehabilitation and barrier-free sub-codes; and lead hazard abatement. It also oversees carnival and amusement ride inspections, liquefied petroleum gas installations, rooming and boarding house licensing, and the state's New Home Warranty program.

Prior to his promotion, Terry served as the chief of the Bureau of Construction Project Review as well as a construction code enforcement manager.

"John is a huge supporter and leader in our code development process," said Ron Piester, ICC vice president of membership and certification. "John has served on the ICC Codes and Standards Council since 2011, where he is now chairman. He is also relied upon for his knowledge and unbiased moderation during the code hearings."

"His reputation precedes him," said Mike Pfeiffer, ICC senior vice president of technical services, reflecting on his years of working with Terry. "He is the epitome of a code geek. While he likes to have a fun, when it comes to code business, whether it is for ICC or New Jersey, John takes his job extremely seriously. For young people looking to get into the code industry, if you model after John Terry, you will do very well."

William Bryant, vice president of the ICC board of directors, who has been a "fellow code geek" working with Terry for more than 15 years, says Terry is "as close to me as a brother and I would consider him my brother." Terry has "always been a professional with everything and he has worked very hard in the past. He gets involved and takes things personally, allowing him to do what he needs to do and think of every angle to get things done." He adds, "I'm happy that a code geek is finally aspiring to the top of the ladder in his division."

Terry is looking forward to his new role and is humbled by this appointment saying, "If you had told me 30 years ago that I was going to be the assistant director of the Division of Codes and Standards, I would have told you that you were crazy! I hope that I can meet the expectations of the director and the commissioner."
