California Building Officials' Annual Meeting recognizes building safety professionals and the importance of continuing education

The California Building Officials (CALBO) convened its 56th Annual Meeting on March 25–29, 2018, in Burlingame, Calif. CALBO's 450-plus attendees participated in a week of continuing education, including technical, administrative and leadership presentations, all presided over by CALBO President David Khorram.

CALBO's Nominating Committee, chaired by Immediate Past President Ron Takiguchi, presented a slate of officers and directors that were elected unanimously and inducted by Past President Raj Patel.

  • Immediate Past President David Khorram, city of Long Beach, Calif.

  • Director Andrew Stuffler, city of Santa Barbara , Calif.

  • Note: David Gonzalves of Tuolumne County, Bryan Spain of Solvang and Brad Wungluck of Manteca are still sitting members of the CALBO board and not up for re-election this year.
A special Lifetime Honorary Member Award was presented to International Code Council Board President Jay Elbettar, who served as CALBO President from 2008–2009, recognizing his contributions to building safety at the local, state and national level.

The ICC Region I Chapter held a meeting led by President Randy Metz. Code Council Board member and chapter liaison Stuart Tom congratulated ICC Region I for its growth and spirit of cooperation among the chapters of California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Sara Yerkes, senior vice president of Government Relations for the International Code Council, provided an update on the Code Council's commitment to welcoming a new generation of building safety professionals during CALBO's Model Code Organizations Luncheon.

On a sad note, CALBO announced the passing of one of its members, William King, Jr., P.E., MCP, CBO, deputy community development director for the city of San Clemente, Calif. King, an ICC Master Code Professional, certified building official and Orange Empire Chapter treasurer, was attending the Annual Meeting at the time of his death. CALBO President Khorram announced a moment of silence to honor him during the Annual Business Meeting.
