Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano and members of the Fire Department City of New York (FDNY) Law Department received a proclamation from the International Code Council, commending the work they have done to change the New York City Fire Code.

“It is truly an honor that you have come out today to acknowledge this important project,” said Commissioner Scoppetta. “These changes were long overdue and will be a legacy for this administration.”

Among the FDNY members commended were Counsel to the Department Julian Bazel and Director of the Code Revision James Hansen, both of whom spearheaded the project.

“We admire your commitment to public and firefighter safety in the City of New York,” said Code Council Vice President of Fire Service Activities Jim Tidwell, who was joined at the event by Code Council Fire Service Activities Regional Manager Bruce Johnson.

The new Fire Code for New York City was approved by the City Council on May 28, replacing a code that had been in operation for more than 100 years.

The Code is based on the International Fire Code with amendments to address New York’s urban needs. Among the many changes is a requirement that the code be reviewed every three years, to ensure amendments will be made when necessary.
