California Chapter Highlights Sacramento Valley Association of Building Officials
Next year‚ the Sacramento Valley Association of Building Officials (SVABO) will celebrate its 60th year as a chapter of a legacy model code organization and the International Code Council. The SVABO chapter has been very active in code development and continues to be very active in state and national code development. Continue reading here.

Building Safety Goes to D.C.
An International Code Council delegation of more than 45 members and staff attended more than 120 Congressional office meetings on Capitol Hill Day. Held in Washington‚ D.C.‚ during Building Safety Week‚ the Council’s group discussed the proposed Community Building Code Administration Grant (CBCAG) Act that would provide $100 million per year over five years to help local governments hire‚ train and equip code officials‚ including building and fire inspectors. Cosponsors of the CBCAG Act include Representative Doris Matsui (D-CA). Read more on Capitol Hill Day. Pelosi Elaborates on First Preventers

During her keynote address at the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s 20th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington‚ D.C.‚ Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) recognized the fire and emergency services as “first preventers‚” a role building safety officials also perform in their daily work. Pelosi emphasized the dual roles of fire code and other compliance personnel who prevent and suppress tragedies caused by fire‚ as well as the aspect of code officials’ work that is routinely unrecognized. First Preventers is a new term promoted by the Code Council to elevate the profile of the code official across the nation. The New York City Department of Buildings and a Texas code official were the first recipients of the Code Council Profile Awards during Building Safety Week. Read more.
City of Lakes to Host Annual Conference
The Code Council’s 2008 Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings take place September 14-23 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Events will include the ICC Expo‚ Education Program‚ Annual Business Meeting and much more. Online registration is now open.

All Governmental Members should review their membership records to ensure representatives can obtain their voting credentials for the Annual Business Meeting and Final Action Hearings in Minneapolis. Modifications must be received 10 days prior to the start of a public hearing and the first deadline is September 5. If changes are needed‚ don’t delay. Update your membership records now.
