Senator Shelby Meets with ICC
on Grant Legislation

Code Council representatives met with Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) in Washington‚ D.C.‚ this week to discuss the Community Building Code Administrative Grant (CBCAG) Act. Senator Shelby is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Banking‚ Housing and Urban Affairs, where the legislation is now being considered after the House of Representatives approved its version of the bill on a voice vote.
Advocates of the CBCAG Act are encouraged to contact Senator Shelby and other members of the Banking committee seeking their support of the legislation. America’s First Preventers will benefit from the program with enhanced code enforcement in jurisdictions across the country. Support the CBCAG Act.

2008 Conference Begins Sunday!
 
The Code Council’s 2008 Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings begins September 14 and offers the opportunity to broaden your code knowledge and contribute to the future of building safety and fire prevention. The Final Action Hearings‚ scheduled for September 17-23‚ will result in the 2009 International Codes‚ and give all attendees the opportunity to voice their opinions about proposed code changes by fostering full and open participation in the Code Council’s governmental process. It’s not too late to register!

Public Safety Wins with New
Storm Shelter Standard

 
A new set of construction guidelines increases public safety for people evacuated to storm shelters and those who use safe rooms in their homes during hurricanes and tornados.
The International Code Council/National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters, approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard‚ offers new guidelines for community shelters and residential safe rooms. More than 16‚000 leaders in the fire and emergency services attended the Fire-Rescue International conference. Montgomery County Division Chief Mike Love was awarded the Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award‚ presented by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and sponsored by the International Code Council‚ which honors those who have dedicated themselves to saving lives and property through the development of codes‚ fire-prevention practices and leadership techniques. The Code Council’s Bruce E. Johnson (center) presents copies of the International Fire Code and International Building Code to Robert Massicotte (left)‚ assistant professor and chair of the University of New Haven (UNH) Fire Science Department‚ and UNH Fire Science Professor Bruce Varga. Code Council‚ ABPA Sign MOU

As a conclusion to the MOU signing that took place at the Code Council’s Codes Forum in February‚ the Council was invited to attend the American Backflow Prevention Association’s (ABPA) Annual National Conference this May in Indianapolis where the final signature from ABPA President John Oakeson was applied. Sanitation Crisis Examined in Africa

Jay Peters‚ PMG Executive Director for the Code Council‚ presented before the South Africa Minister of Water and local industry leaders on the sanitation crisis and steps to improve the local industry. While there‚ Peters visited several Soweto squatter camps and slums for a first-hand view of the local water and sanitation conditions‚ and with PlumbDrain tradeshow manufacturers on products‚ listing possibilities and certification programs.
