USGBC Recognizes IECC, IGCC for Contributions to Energy Efficiency

Last year was a huge milestone for building energy efficiency and state and national codes. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, after more than 40 years of modest improvements in building energy efficiency, the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) helped to achieve a 30-percent efficiency improvement, and a first-in-the-nation green building code—the International Green Construction Code (IGCC)—was unveiled.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency worked with Puerto Rico to adopt the International Building Code, which contains the latest disaster-resistant, seismic, flood and wind provisions.

Tribal Land Construction Safer, More Sustainable under Agreement

The Code Council's long-standing reputation for outstanding codes for every building practice was a key reason the Native American Construction Training Management signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ICC that centers on strategies to create a single, complete system of sustainable commercial and residential codes for all that live on and use Tribal lands throughout the United States.

U.S. Builders Offer MPG-Like Home Efficiency Labels
U.S. homebuilders are now marketing energy-efficient homes, proving the relevance of ICC's code-based, energy-efficiency initiatives. A USA Today story says the U.S. government requires new ENERGY STAR homes earn a HERS score of 85 or lower, 15 percent more efficient than homes built to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The 2009 IECC is at that level today, and the 2012 IECC will improve energy efficiency by 30 percent.

Arlington (Texas) Officials Display Professionalism in Seating Controversy
In what has turned into a black eye for the National Football League, released records show the Dallas Cowboys were slow to respond to requests for building permits required to install temporary seating at Cowboys Stadium until about three weeks before the Super Bowl, despite being informed of the city of Arlington's requirements five months ahead of the big game. Approximately 1,250 seats were deemed unsafe, and about 400 fans had nowhere to sit. "Code Officials face tough issues like this day in and day out," said Code Council COO Dominic Sims. "Arlington Chief Building Official Ed Dryden and his staff should be commended for the professionalism they displayed in this pressure-filled situation."
ICC Announces New Membership Dues Structure
For this first time in its eight-year history, ICC is announcing new membership dues for all its Members, effective April 1. The Code Council's membership dues continue to be below the industry average, even as Member benefits exceed those of comparable organizations.
