President Obama Declares May
As Building Safety Month

International Code Council CEO Rick Weiland announced persistent requests during two administrations has paid off with the first-ever Presidential Proclamation recognizing Building Safety Month as "a critical component of our homeland security, our personal and public safety, the protection of property, and our economic well-being."
The Proclamation reads, in part: "It is our collective responsibility as a Nation—nonprofit organizations and the public and private sectors—to implement effective standards and codes that sustain safe and resilient structures. We need innovation and partnerships at all levels of society to develop transformative breakthroughs in building materials and construction techniques that strengthen the integrity of our homes, workplaces, and commercial facilities."

Clark County, Washington, Presented
2011 "Raising the Profile" Award

The Clark County, Washington, Building Safety Division was presented the Code Council's "Raising the Profile" Award during the 2011 Building Safety Month Reception at ICC Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Clark County was honored for its participation in the "Think Permit" public awareness campaign that reaches children as well as adults and addresses issues from construction design to energy efficiency. Three Legislators Honored for Supporting Building Safety

Three state legislators were the recipients of the International Code Council's first-ever Elected Official of the Year Award. The winners are South Carolina Senator Phil P. Leventis (center, with Code Council CEO Rick Weiland and Government Relations Senior Vice President Sara Yerkes), New Mexico Senator Bernadette M. Sanchez and New Jersey Assemblyman John S. ICC Board Denies IECC Voter Eligibility Challenges
The Code Council Board of Directors has denied three appeals challenging the eligibility of voters at the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) 2010 Final Action Hearings held in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Board's decision affirmed the recommendation of the Appeals Board issued after its hearing on March 31. Appellants alleged violations had occurred at the Charlotte hearings regarding Code Council bylaws governing voter qualifications and Code Council policies governing acceptable funding for code hearing travel. The International Code Council Foundation opened the application period for the Sponsored Scholarship Program. Six scholarships provide financial assistance to children of ICC Members.   IAS Presents Leadership Training in Abu Dhabi
In March, IAS experts presented the three-day "Leadership in the 21st Century" training to the Abu Dhabi Municipal Building Departments' executives and managers at the Abu Dhabi Officers Club. The training included lecture, small group exercises and class discussion activities to help Building Department managers learn creative methods for addressing the challenges of the 21st century workplace, including how to create high-performing teams, design empowering work environments, and develop and manage effective partnerships, alliances and networks. The training is part of the Abu Dhabi Municipal Building Departments" structured approach to preparing for IAS accreditation.
