First Edition of ISPSC Available
for Adoption in March

The first comprehensive swimming pool and spa code to upgrade pool safety and meet the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act will soon be available for adoption by jurisdictions and use by contractors. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), published by the International Code Council and coordinated with the other I-Codes, is expected to be available in March and will include the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals standard, "American National Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Hot Tubs and Catch Basins."

Quality Resources, Code Education Should Be Future Priorities

Providing the highest-quality resources for the code enforcement community, and enhancing public safety through code development and education on the codes are the two most important priorities the Code Council should continue to focus on in the future, according to results from the recent Member Survey. ICC Members can view the full survey results in the February issue of the Building Safety Journal Online.

CPC Designation Exempts ICC-Certified Fire Marshals

Fire Marshals certified by the Code Council have a boot up when applying for a new, broad-based designation launched by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. The CPC Fire Marshal (FM) Designation Program recognizes individuals holding a current ICC Fire Marshal Certification as having met the necessary technical competencies in building and fire code administration.

Earthquakes Serve as
a Safety Reminder

Geologists determined that the New Madrid quakes that struck along the Mississippi River in 1811-1812 were not the first major seismic events in that area; and won't be the last. Upgraded seismic codes can be expensive and cash-strapped communities have to balance cost with risk. Through public/private sector collaboration, the Code Council provides support by developing codes that allow for safe and sustainable construction.

POABC Certification Program
Based on the ICC Process

Certification for Canadian plumbing officials will soon be standardized to ensure consistent enforcement and quality nationwide. The Plumbing Officials' Association of British Columbia (POABC) voted and confirmed a MOU that will allow for certification examinations to be provided by the Building Officials' Association of British Columbia. The exams for Canadian plumbing officials will use the Code Council certification process.
