Hearings Schedule for Portland


On October 22, following a presentation on the cdp ACCESS initiative at 1:15 p.m. PST, the Group A Final Action Hearings will begin with the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC). In the event the cdp ACCESS presentation finishes ahead of schedule, the IFGC hearing will start no earlier than 2:30 p.m. PST. Final Action Hearings for the International Plumbing, Mechanical and Building Codes will start at 1 p.m. PST on October 24 following the Awards Luncheon. Download the schedule. Designating your Governmental Member Voting Representatives is easier than ever with the new online Electronic Voter Designation Systemand must be completed by September 21 in order to vote at the 2012 Annual Business Meeting and the Group A Final Action Hearings in Portland. Every Primary Representative must designate any and all eligible Governmental Member Voting Representatives, including themselves, even if they have voted before.


Blumenauer, Moure-Eraso, Allen
to Speak at Opening Session

Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, Chairperson Rafael Moure-Eraso of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, and Director Patrick Allen of the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services will be guest speakers during the Opening Session of the Code Council's 2012 Annual Conference in Portland. Blumenauer (left) has represented Oregon's 3rd District since 1996 while Moure-Eraso (right) was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 2010.


Code Council CEO Weiland Leaves ICC; Sims Named Acting CEO

International Code Council Chief Executive Officer Rick Weiland announced he is leaving the association to pursue other opportunities. Weiland has been CEO since 2006, after serving as Chief Operating Officer from 2003–2006. Dominic Sims, C.B.O., Executive Vice President and Director of Operations for ICC, will serve as acting CEO while the Code Council conducts a search for Weiland's successor.


ICC Welcomes Mexico Chapter

Code Council Board of Directors President Bill Dupler (pictured) and former CEO Rick Weiland met with officials from the Mexican National Commission for the Conservation of Energy (AEAEE) to ratify a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in 2009 to include ICC's Mexico Chapter, CASEDI. The MOU calls for ICC, AEAEE and CASEDI to work in conjunction in the development of Mexico's energy code that is based on the International Energy Conservation Code.


ICBO's Bihr Remembered As a Visionary, Legend and Friend

Former International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) President James Bihr, one of the primary architects of the International Code Council consolidation, passed away September 7 in Whittier, California, following a battle with cancer. He was 85. Although Bihr retired as ICBO President nearly 20 years ago, his legacy remains strong among those who remember him as a visionary, legend and friend.

 

Jurisdictions First to Adopt New
Swimming Pool and Spa Safety Code


Amarillo, Texas, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and the state of South Carolina are the first jurisdictions in the nation to adopt the 2012 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), the only comprehensive code to upgrade pool and spa safety and meet the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act. The ISPSC uses prescriptive and performance-related provisions to establish minimum safety requirements for public and residential pools, spas and hot tubs. Click to continue.


Op-Ed Praises Florida's Path after Hurricane Andrew

The Sun Sentinel in south Florida published a guest editorial by acting Code Council CEO Dominic Sims that reflects on the state's efforts to improve its building code regulatory system following Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and praises code officials across the country who are working to save lives and protect property from disasters. The editorial encourages local governments and citizens to get involved in the Coalition for Current Safety Codes.
Mendoza Named AZBO Building Official of the Year

The Arizona Building Officials (AZBO) Chapter named Gila County Building Official Joe Mendoza as the Building Official of the Year for 2011–2012 for his knowledge and interpretation of the International Codes, his relationship with other jurisdictions, and the respect he shows for both employees and customers. Mendoza has been an employee of Gila County for 19 years.

New Guideline Now Available to Help Verify
the Performance of Green Buildings


The just-released ICC G4-2012 Guideline for Commissioning will help the building compliance and design communities successfully implement the building commissioning process as mandated in the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and International Energy Conservation Code. The ICC Commissioning Guideline Committee, comprised of global industry leaders and technical experts, developed this new comprehensive tool and incorporated public comments received on a draft version last fall.

  LG Electronics and Sears Recall Gas Dryers For Repair Due to Fire Hazard
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with LG Electronics, Inc., of South Korea and Sears, announced a voluntary recall of about 21,000 LG Electronics and Kenmore Elite Gas Dryers. The gas valve in the recalled dryers can fail to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete. High temperatures inside and on the exterior surface of the dryers can scorch the drum, as well as burn or damage the dryer contents, posing a risk of burn, fire and smoke inhalation. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately until a repair is completed on affected dryers.

Lee Clifton, Director of Plumbing Programs for ICC's Plumbing & Mechanical Activities, gave the presentation "Significant Changes to the 2012 IPC and IFGC" during the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) Orange County Technical Chapter Meeting in Santa Ana, California.   ICC-ES Environmental Programs Expand Technical Expertise
ICC-ES has hired Peter Kulczyk as a Program Manager for the ICC-ES Environmental Programs. Kulczyk has been a member of the ICC Product Development technical staff since 2007, has written publications and training programs related to both green building practices and building codes, and taught classes on the same. He holds ICC certifications in Green Building-Residential; Plans Examiner and Building Inspector, along with that of CalGreen Inspector. He is also certified by the United States Green Building Council as a LEED AP Homes professional. Peter spent four years in the U.S. Navy onboard the Destroyer, USS Reasoner.
