Raising Awareness of Building
Safety in Washington, D.C.

The International Code Council has taken its 2012 Building Safety Month message to the streets of Washington, D.C., to increase awareness of how code officials contribute to building safe and sustainable communities. In addition to the ICC flag flying with the Stars and Stripes at the Code Council's Headquarters, a Building Safety Month banner also hangs in the building's plaza. The 2012 Building Safety Month celebration continues through the end of this week.

N.Y. State Senator Earns Code
Council Raising the Profile Award

New York State Senator Betty Little is the 2012 recipient of the International Code Council's Raising the Profile Award. She was nominated by the New York State Building Officials Conference, an ICC Chapter, for her support of code officials. The award recognizes an individual or organization for acts or contributions that raise public awareness of accomplishments by code personnel that improve public safety in the built environment.


ICC Honors Elected Officials for Building Safe Communities

An Illinois Congresswoman, an Idaho State Senator and the Mayor of Cheyenne, Wyo., are the 2012 recipients of Elected Official of the Year Awards conferred by the Code Council. U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (pictured left), State Senator Dean L. Cameron and Mayor Richard L. Kaysen were recognized for their commitments and contributions to building safety at ICC Headquarters in Washington, D.C., during Building Safety Month.


ICC Takes Its Message of
Building Safety to Capitol Hill

Code Council CEO Richard P. Weiland joined members of the ICC Board of Directors for the annual Capitol Hill Day in Washington, D.C. The ICC contingent visited more than 20 members of Congress to spread the word about Building Safety Month 2012 and how the lawmakers can support the cause in their roles in the federal government. FEMA Presents Presidential Proclamation Declaring National Building Safety Month

David Miller (pictured right) of the Federal Emergency Management Agency formally presented President Obama's Presidential Proclamation declaring May as National Building Safety Month to Code Council Chief Executive Officer Richard P. Weiland during ICC's Building Safety Month celebration in Washington, D.C. "The relationship FEMA has with building code officials is the cornerstone of our mission," Miller said. "We thank ICC for a great partnership."


Shah Recipient of High Performance Building Leadership Award

ICC Board of Directors member Ravi Shah was presented the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition (HPBCCC) Leadership in High Performance Buildings Award. Shah was honored for his work during the development of the International Green Construction Code. Pictured with Shah (center) are ICC Chief Executive Officer Richard P.   N.A.T.I.V.E. School Opens with IgCC Design, Construction
The Northeast Arizona Technological Institute of Vocational Education (N.A.T.I.V.E.) School District held a grand opening for Phase 1 of its new Central Campus located in Kayenta Township. The school building was designed and built to requirements of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC). Kayenta Township is the first jurisdiction in Arizona to adopt the IgCC as it forges a path to sustainable community development. View more photographs.

  FEMA Releases 2011 Tornado MAT Report on
One-Year Anniversary of Joplin, Missouri, Tornado
In response to last year's tornadoes in the Southeast and Missouri, a Federal Emergency Management Agency Mitigation Assessment Team was deployed to perform assessments of structures affected by the tornadoes, investigate safe room and storm shelter performance, and document lessons learned to help mitigate the loss of life and damage to buildings from future tornado events. Key conclusions of the FEMA MAT report, released on May 22, the one-year anniversary of the devastating Joplin, Mo., tornado, include the need for jurisdictions to adopt and implement current building codes and build safe rooms and storm shelters. Key recommendations include proposed changes to building codes, assessments of all new and existing critical facilities for use as tornado refuge areas, and proposed protections for schools.

  First Phase of New Automated Code
Checking Technology Completed
The Code Council and Fiatech have completed the Proof-of-Concept phase of the AutoCodes Project initiative, which seeks to employ automated code checking technology and Building Information Models (BIM) to help speed up and improve consistency in the building code and approval process. BIMs are complex databases containing detailed design and construction information that can be rendered visually in three dimensions, and checked very quickly.

  Code Council, SEAOSC Offer Structural Engineering Webinars
The Code Council and the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC) have collaborated to bring a series of timely, discipline-specific educational webinars on Structural Engineering and code-related topics to the ICC Campus Online. As you all know, May is Building Safety Month, and to celebrate it in our Government Relations department style, every May we have a Hill Day where the Executive Committee of the ICC Board of Directors and local Board members visit their representatives and senators in Congress to spread the word about Building Safety Month, their role as code officials, to talk about building codes and to urge Members of Congress to be supportive.   ICC, CDC and NEHA Unite to Enhance Public Safety
Representatives from the International Code Council (ICC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) have entered into a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) intended to bring enhanced public health, safety and uniformity to design, installation, inspection and operation of aquatic facilities. The MOU reinforces ongoing cooperation and opens avenues for increasing the effectiveness of swimming safety through formal partnership. CDC, NEHA and ICC will share their respective strengths, knowledge and resources to support swimming pool and spa initiatives that advance their common goal to promote public health and safety.
