MEMBER NEWS Oklahoma Officials Moving Forward with School Storm Shelter Program Following two deadly EF5 tornadoes within 11 days—and questions about why an estimated 1,600 Oklahoma schools are not equipped with storm shelters—state officials are moving forward with a privately funded program to provide shelters to schools that don't already have them. Many schools built in the state in recent years were constructed with some sort of shelter, and the "Shelter Oklahoma Schools" program aims to fill in the gaps in older facilities and their communities. The devastating EF5 tornado that hit Newcastle, Shawnee and Moore, Okla., on May 20 claimed at least 24 lives, including seven children who were in the Plaza Towers Elementary School when the storm struck the facility. A second tornado hit the Oklahoma City area on May 31 and claimed at least 18 more lives. Continue reading story |

CODES CORNER Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Plumbing Code The thresholds at which indirect waste piping is required to be trapped have been increased and an exception has been added to address clear waste water. In the past, indirect waste piping was required to be trapped where it exceeded 24 inches in horizontal developed length or 48 inches in total developed length. The justification for increased developed lengths without a trap, 30 inches for a horizontal measurement and 54 inches in total developed length, is based on Section 1002.1 addressing fixture traps, including the allowance of 30 inches center-to-center for a combination fixture as permitted in Exception 2. The 54-inch total developed length allowance is simply the 30-inch horizontal length allowance plus the 24-inch vertical distance allowed from a fi xture to its trap. The changes are considered logical and provide consistency with other allowances in the code. Continue reading story |

ICC JOBTARGET How Construction Can Lose Jobs in a Home Building Rebound The latest jobs report showed a drop in construction employment, but it isn't because the housing boom is slowing. The sector lost about 6,000 jobs overall, according to the Labor Department's jobs report. This was largely due to a decline in hiring for non-residential buildings or public works projects like roads or sewer plants. Combined, these two areas lost 19,700 jobs. Meanwhile, home builders and their subcontractors added 13,300 workers. A big part of the sector's pullback is due to a drop in government-funded construction projects, a trend that has been going on for about two years. Continue reading story |
