CODE Q&A
CODE Q&A: 2009 International Residential Code — Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Provisions
(The information below is excerpted from the 2009 International Codes Q&A series.)
Questions regarding access to appliances are raised and discussed:

Q: As it relates to access to appliances in Section M1305.1, are PVC combustion air intake and vent pipes serving a direct-vent HVAC unit considered permanent construction? Is sprinkler piping considered permanent construction?

Q: Section M1305.1.1 requires a minimum 3-inch space around a central furnace when it is installed in a compartment or alcove. There is no definition of compartment or alcove in the IRC. We have an electric central furnace that measures about 14 inches wide by 22 inches deep installed in a furnace room that measures 4 feet by 5.5 feet with an 8-foot ceiling. Would this room be considered a compartment or alcove, which would not allow the furnace to be installed with the 1-inch clearance to the wall as provided by the manufacturer?

Click to get answers to these code questions by reading more on this excerpt from the 2009 IRC Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Provisions Q&A.
The 2009 Q&A series will assist engineers, architects, inspectors, fire and building officials, and plans examiners with finding answers to common code questions that arise during design, plan review, construction and daily code enforcement. Features: many new questions and answers; detailed photos, tables and illustrations that provide a clear understanding of both the intent and meaning of the code text; the relevant code section printed before the question and answer for easy reference; and discussion on a wide variety of topics.
