Dan Carlson Named Oregon
Building Official of the Year


Corvallis Development Services Manager Dan Carlson (left), who has been working for the city for 17 years, has been named the state's Building Official of the Year for his work on Corvallis' online permits system, his work on statewide organizations, and his community service. Carlson championed several initiatives for the city of Corvallis through technology and organizational changes that are designed to make the development more timely and predictable for project applicants and transparent to the community at large. With a very strong commitment to customer service, he has been a strong advocate for protecting public health and safety through effective administration of building codes. Continue reading story

ICC Board Considers New Education Strategy
As part of ICC's ongoing commitment to deliver quality education to the building community, the Code Council Board of Directors is considering a plan to enhance the organization's training and education programs so building safety, fire, design and construction professionals are educated on how best to apply and enforce the International Codes. The plan unveils a strategy that includes a focus on a preferred provider program, premium core training, enhanced online training, and a commitment to staffing the team for the future. Better Understand Code Application, Compliance

The 2012 International Building Code (IBC) Handbook, a new publication from the International Code Council (ICC) and McGraw-Hill Professional, combines detailed discussion with more than 600 color illustrations to support the application of IBC provisions. Study Proves Why Foreclosed Homes Should Be Screened for Mold
Dust samples collected from 41 foreclosed homes and then analyzed for mold concentrations comprising of 20 molds commonly found in water-damaged homes, identified that 88 percent of the foreclosed homes contained dangerous levels of Aspergillus flavus; a very infectious mold that is capable of causing human disease. Eighty-seven percent had one or more molds that have been known to cause childhood asthma and 80 percent of had dangerous levels of Stachybotrys chartarum (Black Mold), which indicated that the homes had suffered severe water damage.
