MEMBER NEWS Former ICC Board Member Named to NIBS Board International Code Council Member and former ICC Board member Cindy Davis, C.B.O., is one of the newest members of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Board of Directors. She will serve a three-year term, representing state agency officials in the public interest category. Davis is the state building code administrator in the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. She is responsible for managing the building and fire code regulations for the Commonwealth of Virginia, providing oversight of the industrialized and manufactured housing, as well as the regulatory process of adopting the Uniform Statewide Building Code for the Commonwealth. The theme for the month is "Code Officials Keep You Safe." ANNIVERSARY NEWS International Code Council Marks Another 10 Year Milestone Ten years ago, if a nationwide retailer or manufacturer wanted to build a new facility, the code requirements for the same structure would have been different in the East, Midwest, South or West. Home builders, architects, engineers, designers, and contractors faced the same obstacles, a patchwork of building safety regulations. And career opportunities for code officials and building safety professionals were also limited by regional barriers. That all changed on Feb. 1, 2003, when three regional code organizations—Building Officials and Code Administrators, International Conference of Building Officials and Southern Building Code Congress International—began operating as one consolidated association: the International Code Council. CODES CORNER Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Mechanical Code A modification has been made to Section 506.3.8, Grease Duct Cleanouts and Other Openings. In addition to reformatting the previous criteria for grease duct cleanouts; gasket and sealing materials on grease duct cleanout doors must now be rated at a minimum of 1500°F. In order to provide greater ease in understanding the criteria for cleanouts and other openings in grease duct systems, item 6 has been added and specifies a minimum temperature rating for gasket and sealing materials on grease duct cleanout doors. The temperature threshold of at least 1500°F is consistent with the temperature requirements for the gasketing used for the duct-to-hood joint as addressed in Section 506.3.2.2, Exception 1. INDUSTRY NEWS Chinese Drywall Bill Passes Congress The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation on Jan. 1 banning the sale of contaminated drywall imported from China and insisting that the Chinese government force manufacturers to compensate American homeowners who have faced property damage and health problems caused by the tainted product. The Drywall Safety Act now goes to U.S. President Barack Obama for final approval. Continue reading story |

ICC JOBTARGET 2012's Construction Rebound: Behind the Facade Forbes' Trulia Chief Economist Jed Kolko discusses why new home construction starts in 2012 were still way below long-term normal levels despite having reached their highest level since 2008. The Census reported that there were 780,000 new housing starts in 2012, a 28-percent increase over 2011, and Raleigh, Austin and Houston led the U.S. in construction activity. The Census also reported that the seasonally adjusted annualized rate for December was 954,000. However, construction activity is still far below normal levels in most of the country. NEW RESOURCES New Commentary Explains Accessibility Requirements in Easy-to-Use Format The ICC A117.1-2009 Standard and Commentary contains the full text of the standard ICC A117.1-2009: Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, including tables and figures, followed by the corresponding commentary for each section. The commentary and accompanying figures explain the explain background and intent of the requirements and suggest the most effective method of application. Potential consequences of not following the provisions of the standard are also discussed. The Commentary provides an excellent resource for anyone who wants a better understanding of ICC A117.1-2009 and how its provisions make buildings and facilities accessible and usable.
