MEMBER NEWS Maple Grove, Minn., Presented AMBO Building Department of the Year Award The Association of Minnesota Building Officials Chapter (AMBO) presented its 2012 Building Department of the Year Award to the city of Maple Grove, Minn. The city's building department was recognized for its dedication to code development and education for its building inspectors and code officials around the state of Minnesota. AMBO President and Maples Grove resident Dave Fisher presented the award that is given annually by the Chapter to help raise the profile of code officials and the importance of building safety. "The fire and police departments have lights and sirens and uniforms," Fisher said during the Maple Grove City Council meeting. "Building departments are never heard of and we’re trying to find a way to promote building departments." Continue reading story |

CODES CORNER Significant Code Changes to the 2009 A117.1 Accessibility Standard Two new exceptions are provided to eliminate the requirement for knee and toe space beneath small drink counters or furnishings where the element is not intended to function as a table for forward approach. These types of elements are not really designed or intended to function as a table, dining, or work surface but often can be viewed that way. The addition of Section 902.3 addresses a requirement not previously covered in the standard. This requirement is conceptually similar to sections dealing with elements beneath cooktops, sinks, or lavatories and is intended to prevent harm to users who place their legs beneath an element. ICC JOBTARGET U.S. Construction Jobs Hit Three-and-a-Half-Year High Preliminary figures from the US Bureau of Labor statistics show employment in the construction sector was at its highest since September 2009 last month at 5.78 million jobs. According to the figures, some 48,000 jobs were added in the industry in the month of February, from the 5.74 million employed in January. Continue reading story |
