Manuel Presented Inaugural Curtis Mann Award by Building Officials Association of Louisiana

Lafayette Parish Building Official Larry Manuel was presented the inaugural Curtis Mann Award by the Building Officials Association of Louisiana (BOAL) during the Chapter's 2013 Annual Conference in Lafayette, Louisiana. The award, named in honor of long-time New Orleans Building Official Curtis Mann, is considered the highest honor for a building official in the state of Louisiana. Manuel was recognized by BOAL for exemplifying the highest standards of integrity and professionalism and for his accomplishments and achievements in the code enforcement profession. High School Building Code Program Meets Presidential Challenge
An established training program supported by the International Code Council addresses a presidential challenge to meet the demands of a high-tech economy. The High School Technical Training Program teaches high school students the importance of building codes and provides graduates with an advantage in the job market. The challenge is to redesign America's high schools so they better equip graduates for the demands of a high-tech economy. Schools will be rewarded to develop new partnerships with colleges and employers, and create classes that focus on science, technology, engineering, and math—the skills today’s employers are looking for to fill jobs. Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Fuel Gas Code
A modification has been made to Section 408.4, Sediment Traps. An illustration of a sediment trap is now included within the IFGC in order to clarify the intent of the provision. Because of misunderstandings as to how a sediment trap is to be constructed, an illustration has been added to the code text to clarify the intended installation method. In addition, decorative vented gas appliances and gas fireplaces are no longer required to be installed with a sediment trap. Although these appliances are susceptible to harm from debris, they are also manually operated; therefore, the user would be in attendance and aware of any problem. Continue reading story

Design Examples for the 2009 NEHRP Recommended Provisions Available
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that the 2009 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions: Design Examples (FEMA P-751CD) is available for order, and will soon be available for download from the FEMA Library. The new supporting document covers the fundamentals of earthquake engineering, ground motion and structural analysis and provides a series of design examples based on the 2009 NEHRP Provisions. The design examples in FEMA P-751CD include shallow and pile foundations; a steel building with buckling restrained braced frame; steel framed buildings; reinforced concrete; precast concrete; composite steel and concrete; masonry; wood design; seismically isolated structures; nonbuilding structure design; and design for nonstructural components. Growing Labor Shortages Impeding Housing and Economic Recovery
Growing labor shortages in all facets of the residential construction sector are impeding the housing and economic recovery. Since June of 2012, residential construction firms are reporting an increasing number of shortages in all aspects of the industry. The labor shortages have caused builders to pay higher wages or subcontractor bids to secure projects, and consequently, to raise home prices. Part of the labor shortages are attributed to the fact that many skilled residential construction workers were forced to seek employment elsewhere during the recession and are no longer currently available.
