California Fire Marshal Hoover Earns Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award

California Fire Marshal Tonya L. Hoover will be honored with the 2014 Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award for her history of courage, determination, and dedication to fire and life safety. The award, created by the Code Council and the Fire & Life Safety Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, will be presented in August during Fire-Rescue International 2014.

Code Council Board of Directors President Stephen D. Jones, CBO, said Hoover's spirit and accomplishments exemplify what the Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award is all about. "Tonya Hoover's work in fire safety and prevention undoubtedly has saved countless lives," Jones said. "Her dedication has been inspirational to many. Tonya is a hero in every sense of the word." Ridgewood, N.J., Overhauling Building Department to Improve Efficiency

The Building Department announced implementation of a new structure, which is intended to enhance the quality of services that are provided by having an unwavering focus on the critical requirements of customers. At present, the Building Department is part of Ridgewood's Community Services.

"This is the latest step in our effort to make village government more responsive, more user-friendly and more accountable to the people we serve," said Mayor Paul Aronsohn of the organizational restructuring. "And we are determined to get this right." Read more from NorthJersey.com

New Glendale, Calif., Building Official Ready to Hit the Ground Running

Jan Edwards, Glendale's new Building Official, has many challenges ahead, such as handling the city's apartment development boom with a leaner staff. However, with 25 years of building-and-safety experience under her belt, she is up to the task. Edwards replaces Stuart Tom, who became the Glendale Fire Department's fire marshal in December. She was officially promoted to her new position this month. The city's building official helms the city's Building & Safety Division, which reviews development projects and upholds building codes. Austin, Texas, Fire Department Demonstrates Importance of Fire Sprinklers

The Austin Fire Department (AFD) demonstrated how important fire sprinklers are in homes during the Austin, Texas, Habitat for Humanity, which celebrated the completion of its 200th home built with fire sprinklers.

"It suppresses the fire enough where it might completely put out the fire or at least keep it in check enough where it's survivable conditions inside the room until the fire department can get on scene," said AFD firefighter Adam Torres. View the video at KXAN Online

Mountain View, Calif., Chief Building Official Anthony Ghiossi Dies at 49

Mountain View city employees are mourning the loss of the city's chief building official, Anthony Ghiossi, who died June 10 after a year-and-a-half long battle with cancer. He was 49. Ghiossi worked for the city of Mountain View for nearly two decades, starting out as permit technician at the building department's front counter in 1991, then became a building inspector before leaving to work as the head of Los Gatos building department between 2004 and 2010, when he returned to Mountain View as chief building official.

"He was one of our great success stories," said Planning Director Randy Tsuda. "He worked his way all the way up. He was tremendous person. He loved Mountain View and was passionate about the community. And he was full of energy." Read more from the Mountain View Voice

Be Sure You Know the ICC Code Development Deadlines

ICC requires that Primary Representatives must complete an online questionnaire by September 1, 2014, for Governmental Member Voting Representatives (“GMVR”) to be eligible to vote at this year’s Annual Business Meeting, Public Comment Hearing and Online Governmental Consensus Vote. If a GMVR was properly validated for the 2014 Online Assembly Floor Motion, the Primary Representative does not need to re-validate the GMVR for this Annual Business Meeting, Public Comment Hearing and Online Governmental Consensus Vote, unless there are updates or changes to be made.
