The International Code Council and more than 20 other associations that are leaders of America's design and construction industry for the first time have agreed to promote resilience in contemporary planning, building materials, design, construction and operational techniques as the solution to making the nation's aging infrastructure more safe and secure. CEOs of almost two-dozen leading design and construction industry associations with more than 700,000 members generating almost $1 trillion in GDP used the occasion of "Building Safety Month" to issue a joint statement on resilience. As families head outdoors to enjoy nice weather in spring and summer, special precautions should be taken to ensure outdoor areas are safe from potential hazards. Swimming pools, decks, barbecue grills, gardening tools, fertilizers and lawn toys all pose risks to children and adults.

Frank Castelvecchi and Family Honored for Firefighting Legacy
Frank Castelvecchi, a former Virginia Building Code Officials Association (VBCOA) board member, and his family received the Outstanding Family Volunteer Service Award from Gov. Terry McAuliffe's office as part of the Volunteerism and Community Service Awards. Frank is a Senior Plan Review Engineer in Henrico County—an ICC Governmental Member.

cdpACCESS Online Voting Continues through May 30; Report of the Hearings Due June 6
More than 520 proposed changes were debated during the 2014 Group C Committee Action Hearings in Memphis, Tenn. View the results. Online voting through cdpACCESS, ICC's new code development tool, on assembly floor motions from the Group C Hearings continues until 7 p.m. Central on May 30. The results of the online vote will be included in the Report of the Committee Action Hearing which is scheduled to be posted June 6. Successful assembly motions will result in automatic public comments to be considered at the Public Comment Hearings Oct. 1–5 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Significant Changes to the 2012 International Building Code
Secondary water supplies must now be designed to operate automatically. Any high-rise building constructed in accordance with the International Fire Code and International Building Code requires a secondary water supply when it is located on property classified as a Seismic Design Category (SDC) C, D, E or F. Because an earthquake can break underground water pipes, Section 903.3.5.2 requires high-rise buildings within the indicated SDCs to have a secondary water supply, sized to provide the hydraulic demand of the building's automatic sprinkler system, including hose streams, for a minimum flow duration of 30 minutes.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week Observed May 25–31
History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. Hurricane hazards come in many forms, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes, and rip currents. National Hurricane Preparedness Week will focus on educating people on hurricane basics, storm surge, wind, inland flooding, the forecast process, getting a plan and after the storm. The theme for this year's celebration is "Be Prepared—Get A Plan! Know Your Evacuation Zone."
