Building Safety Month Concludes
with Backyard Safety

Backyard Safety Week focused on educating consumers with an emphasis on swimming pool and spa safety. The good news is that after extensive collaboration with a wide range of industry experts, including the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the International Code Council's 2012 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code enhances consumer safety. The ISPSC is the first comprehensive swimming pool code that includes seamless integration with the widely adopted family of International Codes and meets the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act requirements. The code adresses barriers, decking, lighting, diving, sanitizing equipment, filter, and suction fitting provisions. It covers residential and public pools, portable and in-ground spas, water parks, exercise spas and hot tubs. For backyard safety tips, click here.

  National Hurricane Preparedness Week
Leads into 2012 Atlantic Season
National Hurricane Preparedness Week was observed May 27-June 2 and served as a lead-in to the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts there is a 70-percent chance of nine to 15 named storms this year, four to eight hurricanes, and one to three major hurricanes. Already last month, Tropical Storm Alberto and Tropical Depression Beryl formed in the Southeast with Beryl producing record amounts of rainfall. The Code Council offers numerous safety recommendations to help citizens prepare for the hurricane season, including tips for before, during and after storms.

Community Events Help Promote Building Safety
Jurisdictions across the country, like Oro Valley, Ariz., are offering residents free pool and spa inspection until Labor Day to ensure that critical features are in place to protect children, identify deficiencies and offer suggestions to remedy hazards. There is no obligation on the part of the homeowner to make the corrections, but officials will provide direction to those interested in safety. Click here for information on hosting a community event in your jurisdiction.

Building Officials Conference of Northeast Ohio
Participates in Building Safety Month
The Building Officials Conference of Northeast Ohio (BOCONEO) participated in Building Safety Month with an information booth and displays at the Steelyard Commons Home Depot in Cleveland, Ohio. Using the public relations packet developed by the ICC Foundation, pamphlets and flyers, and promotional give-a-ways, they brought the message of Building Safety to the residents of northeast Ohio. BOCONEO members constructed visual aids with mock-up wall sections showing code compliant electrical and plumbing installations along side other mock-ups showing improper installations. The group was well received by the Home Depot staff and was invited back in the fall to participate in another event along with fire service professionals.
