SAVE Program Verifies
Nu-Wool
Recycled Content |
|
The ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation (SAVE) program has issued Nu-Wool a Verification of Attributes Report (VAR-1005) for its WALLSEAL Premium Thermal and Sound Insulation product. The ICC-ES VAR verifies the amount of recycled content for WALLSEAL. The WALLSEAL product is a loose-fill insulation made up of a uniform low-density mixture of recycled cellulosic fibers—old newspapers—designed for owners and contractors who want a green insulation product with a Class A fire rating that has both thermal and sound insulating characteristics. more>> |

Prefabricated Masonry Fireplaces Provide Alternative |
|
Offering both warmth and charm, fireplaces are often the centerpiece of a home, providing a prominent and welcoming invitation to sit, relax and visit. Enter the Mason-Lite modular concrete fireplace from Masonry Fireplace Industries, LLC (MFI). Constructed in the field using prefabricated concrete firebox components with factory-built chimneys, Mason-Lite fireplaces are lightweight and offer the look and feel of a true masonry product. However, as an alternative product, these modular fireplaces are not covered by existing codes or standards for fire resistance and seismic conditions, thus providing no predetermined way to verify the product’s reliability, strength and performance. |
|
With interest in their product growing in the home building community, MFI called on ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), a subsidiary of the International Code Council (ICC). ICC-ES provides technical evaluation of building products, components, methods and materials. The organization helps manufacturers such as MFI by producing technical reports, which verify that their innovative products meet code requirements and warrant regulatory approval. more>> |

How-To Guidelines
for
Report Holders |
|
|
|
When an ICC-ES Evaluation Report is issued, the manufacturer of the product may use the ICC-ES mark and report number to promote the product. ICC-ES guidelines explain proper use of the mark. ICC-ES has introduced a new mark that will be issued for all newly published Evaluation Reports. During this transition period, use of either mark will be acceptable. Helpful information regarding product labeling also is available in the ID Section of each report and approval letter. |

ICC-ES Evaluation Committee Meeting Highlights |
|
The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee met in Birmingham, Alabama, to consider new or revised acceptance criteria. Eighteen agenda items were approved. Among the highlights, the 2009 International Codes have been revised for some products to require listing by an approved agency. These new requirements apply to sandwich panel adhesives, clay and concrete roof tile and metal roof panels. Report holders for those criteria will be required, beginning July 2010, to provide evidence of listing with an approved agency, and evidence of a contractual agreement with an accredited inspection agency for inspections to verify conformance to the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Quality Documentation (AC10). more>> |

Why Should I Care about
ICC-ES Evaluation Reports? |
ICC-ES is aware of regional differences on how its Evaluation Reports are used. In some parts of the country, code officials rely heavily on ICC-ES Evaluation Reports, and the local design community is very familiar with these reports.
In other parts of the country, it has been customary to rely on
manufacturers’ product literature rather than evaluation reports. On more
than one occasion the design community
has asked, “Why should I care about an ICC-ES Evaluation Report?” Here's an answer to this question. more>> |

ES Board Extends Compliance Date for 2009 Codes |
|
The ICC-ES Board of Directors approved an amendment to extend the date for compliance with the 2009 International Codes: |
|
A motion passed unanimously to extend the date ICC-ES will require compliance with the 2009 codes to July 1, 2010.
Compliance with the 2006 codes will be mandatory until July 1, 2010.
Compliance with the 2009 codes will be optional between January 1 and July 1, 2010. |
|
This transition period will give report applicants more time to comply and staff more time to establish requirements for the 2009 codes. Report applicants that are adding the 2009 codes are encouraged to keep the 2006 codes in the report to cover those jurisdictions that do not adopt the 2009 codes immediately. |
|
ICC-ES will maintain its current policy of not adding the 2009 codes to evaluation reports before January 1, 2010. |
