Environmental Criteria Discussed at First
ICC-ES Environmental Committee Meeting

ICC-ES recently selected seven highly qualified candidates from many applications to serve on the Environmental Committee that will support the expansion of ICC-ES Environmental Programs. "The applicants who applied for membership on the Environmental Committee were very impressive," said Rob Brooks, ICC-ES Director of Environmental Programs.

An overview of the rules and procedures was discussed during the committee's meeting February 13-14 in Los Angeles where three new or revised environmental criteria were considered. Environmental Criteria under development with public input also was presented. Dave Walls, ICC Director of Sustainability Programs, gave a presentation to the committee and attendees on the upcoming publication of the International Green Construction Code.

New Acceptance Criteria for Anchor
Channels in Concrete Elements (AC232)

ICC-ES recently issued new acceptance criteria AC232 "Acceptance Criteria for Anchor Channels in Concrete Elements" for the qualification and design of anchor channels. An anchor channel is understood to be an approximately U-shaped steel bracket, either hot-rolled or cold-formed, provided with at least two headed anchors attached to the back of the channel. To be within the scope of AC232, anchor channels must be assembled in a manufacturing facility. The anchors must be attached to the channel in the plant and not in the field.

ICC-ES Evaluation Committee Considers
Several Important Acceptance Criteria

The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee met February 14-16 in Los Angeles to consider 19 newly proposed acceptance criteria (ACs) for alternate products and products where additional clarification is needed in the code, as well as existing criteria that needed to be revised. The ACs covered topics ranging from Suspended Ceiling Framing Systems to Fasteners Power-Driven into Concrete, Steel and Masonry Elements. Of the 19 items that were considered, 16 were approved and three held for further study.

Manufacturers Represented by CISPI Enjoy Recognition of
Their Products for Code Compliance, Green Attributes

Many people are unaware that today's cast iron soil pipes are made with almost 100-percent recycled content. The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute (CISPI), which represents three U.S. manufacturers of cast iron soil pipes and fittings (AB&I Foundry, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company and Tyler Pipe), chose ICC-ES to verify their products' green attributes and to get their "green" message out to code officials, architects, engineers and consumers. "One of our primary goals was to have everyone in the building industry understand how green our products really are. With the ICC-ES VARs, we not only get wide recognition, but we now have independent verification of the 'greenness' of our products," says Bill LeVan, CISPI Executive Vice President.

Understanding Section 1703 of the IBC

A product evaluation entity may mistakenly consider itself as an "approved agency" under section 1703 of the International Building Code (IBC) — even though the agency has not been designated as an approved agency by the local building official, as the IBC requires. According to the IBC, the approval is based on information provided to building officials by the agency. The building official then determines if the agency meets the applicable requirements of Section 1703.

Moinian Named Senior Vice President ICC-ES
Growth Strategies and Certification Programs

ICC-ES is pleased to announce the promotion of Shahin Moinian, P.E., to ICC-ES Senior Vice President of ICC-ES Growth Strategies and Certification Programs. As the leader of the ICC-ES PMG team, Shahin optimized the certification process and reduced certification time for clients. More importantly, Shahin took a variety of steps to enhance the customer service for product manufacturers who aim at introducing products to market in an expeditious manner. This all took place while maintaining the high quality of product evaluation, which is what ICC-ES is famous for.
