Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Fire Service Membership Council (FSMC) eNews. This quarterly newsletter is one of several initiatives undertaken by your FSMC Governing Committee to provide you concise and timely information about our ICC Membership Council.

    2013 WILDFIRE SEASON
ICC Coordinates Nationwide Wildfire Fighting Seminars

Prevention costs pennies compared to the costs of damages and recovery from wildfire, as this video and the recent loss of 19 elite wildfire fighters in the deadly Yarnell disaster clearly demonstrate.

And in a year that was predicted by the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Department of Agriculture to be an "above normal" wildfire year due to soaring summer temperatures and low precipitation, serious efforts are underway to coordinate wildfire prevention strategies in high fire potential regions. The way to reduce the disastrous effects of wildfires is community-wide planning long before the fire starts. Continue reading story
 
    CAPITOL HILL REPORT
Code Council Testifies in Support of Safe Housing for Homeless Veterans
ICC was among proponents seeking congressional support of the Safe Housing for Homeless Veterans Act (HR 2065), telling lawmakers the International Fire (IFC), Building and Residential Codes are fundamental to building safety, and that the IFC upholds those standards at the time of annual inspections. "Those of us who work to achieve building safety at both the state and local level appreciate the concern that this bill has for the welfare of our veterans, who are living in housing subsidized by the Department of Veterans Affairs," ICC Board of Directors Member Robert Drexler (pictured) said in testimony before the Committee on Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health.     GROUP B PUBLIC COMMENT HEARINGS
2015 IFC will be Finalized in Atlantic City
The framework of the 2015 International Fire Code is heading to Atlantic City, N.J., for final disposition by code officials from across the country during ICC's Group B Public Comment Hearings Oct. 2-10 at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The hearings will be preceded by the Code Council's 2013 Annual Conference. Continue reading story
 
    ICC'S 2013 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Education Courses Aimed at Fire Sevice Officials in Atlantic City
Two education opportunities developed by members of the ICC Fire Service Membership Council Governing Committee will be available for fire service officials attending the Code Council’s 2013 Annual Conference in Atlantic City, N.J. The first course, "New Approaches to Warehouse Fire Protection/Warehouse Commodity – Fire Protection Mismatch; a Recipe for Major Warehouse Fires," focuses on the challenges of commodity classification and high‐piled combustible storage. The second course, "Code Hearing Orientation for First Timers," will be an overview of ICC's code hearing process led by a panel of experts from the FSMC Governing Committee. Continue reading story
 
    HONORING FALLEN HEROES
FSMC Gathers Donations for West, Texas, Fund
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation received a check from ICC Board President Ron Piester of donations gathered during ICC's Group B Committee Action Hearings in Dallas. The donations, made at a booth set up by the ICC Fire Service Membership Council, were dedicated to assist the survivors and coworkers of the fire and EMS personnel who died in the line of duty in response to the massive explosion and fires April 17. CFSI Events Bring Together Leaders for America's First Responders
A silent auction in Baltimore and a special DVD offer continued the work of the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) to bring together fire service leaders and key congressional and administration officials to meet the needs of America's local first responders. The 10th Annual CFSI Silent Auction featured turn-out gear, travel packages, sports memorabilia and much more to raise funds for the CFSI. A special DVD package is available to commemorate the 25th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, D.C., and includes key speeches and workshop highlights.
