NYC Special Inspections Update New York City is in the final-review stage of a revision to the 2008 rules that require the accreditation of special inspection agencies. The requirement for special inspections by qualified and certified inspectors went into effect, but there has been a delay in implementing the requirement for special inspection agencies to become accredited. The new rule will allow for a more gradual phase-in of the requirement for accreditation with the creation of three classes of projects and an initial requirement that only the largest projects will require inspections by accredited special inspection agencies. IAS Accreditation Committee Meeting
Set for October 7 The next IAS Accreditation Committee meeting will be held October 7 at the Doubletree by Hilton Los Angeles in Norwalk, California, to establish or revise accreditation criteria pertaining to IAS accreditation programs. Attendance is open to the public—no meeting reservations are required—and provides all interested parties with the opportunity to contribute ideas or voice opinions on the posted agenda items. |
Building Department/Fire Prevention Department Accreditation Lead Evaluator Training Offered at ICC Annual Conference A training program will be held at the ICC Annual Conference for individuals interested in qualifying as lead evaluators for the IAS Building Department and Fire Prevention Department Accreditation programs. The training will be held October 31-November 2 (partial days) in Phoenix, Arizona. Space is limited but registration is free for individuals who are fully registered for the ICC Annual Conference. Special Inspection Training Set for ICC Annual Conference IAS is offering a training program titled "Special Inspections–Implementing and Managing IBC Chapter 17 Requirements for Building Departments" at the ICC Annual Conference in Phoenix. Attendees will learn how to set up and manage a special inspection program and how IAS can assist building departments in this effort. The three-hour program will be offered November 1-2 and provides CEUs from ICC. The training will be provided by Greg Johnson, a past member of the ICC and IAS Boards of Directors and a past chairman of the ICC Education Committee. Fire Prevention Accreditation Presentation at NASFM Julius Halas, Director of the Florida Division of the State Fire Marshal, and Chuck Ramani, President of IAS, gave a presentation titled "Accrediting a Fire Prevention Bureau - Florida's Experience" at the National Association of State Fire Marshals 22nd Annual Conference in New Orleans. The Florida Bureau of Fire Prevention is the first department to participate in IAS's Fire Prevention and Life Safety Department Accreditation Program. The program is based on IAS accreditation criteria (AC 426), that was approved by the IAS Accreditation Committee in May. For more information, click here. |
IAS Recognizes William Gregory and Jim Goodloe IAS would like to thank William (Bill) Gregory for his dedication and contributions toward the goal of improving public safety as a member of the IAS Accreditation Committee from June 2003 to June 2011. IAS also extends its gratitude to Jim Goodloe for his service on the IAS/CPSE Technical Advisory Council (TAC) – Fire Prevention Departments. IAS Attends NCSL International Conference IAS will attend the National Conference of Standards Laboratories (NCSL) Annual Conference, August 21-25, at the Gaylord National Convention Center, in National Harbor, Maryland. Hershal Brewer, Principal Accreditation Officer for IAS, will be participating in the NCSL Accreditation Resources Committee meeting and IAS will have a display booth in the exposition. NCSL International is a nonprofit organization with over 1500 member organizations from academic, scientific, industrial, commercial and government facilities engaged in measurement science. Measurement Uncertainty Training in Trinidad IAS successfully completed a three-day training class on Uncertainty of Measurement (MU) at the Caribbean Reseach Institute in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The training session was led by B. N. Taranath and Dr. Robert Audette. The class was attended by more than 22 persons, including personnel who work in microbiology, food technology, thermal and other areas. The session combined classroom training with a hands-on workshop in the respective laboratories. The feedback received from the participants indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the training course. |
IAS Product Certification Agency Accreditation Program Expands Recognition with Pacific Accreditation Cooperation The Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (PAC) has recognized IAS as a signatory member of its Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA). Under the terms of this arrangement, the IAS product certification agency accreditation program is recognized as equivalent to those of other accreditation bodies that are PAC MLA signatories.
