Can't attend the Group A Public Comment Hearings or ICC's 2015 Annual Conference in Long Beach, Calif.? The hearings, Opening Session and Annual Business Meeting will be webcast on the ICC website. The Opening Session begins at 8:00 a.m. Pacific on Monday, Sept. 28, followed by the Members Forum and Annual Business Meeting. The hearings begin at 8:00 a.m. Pacific on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The webcast can be viewed on computers as well as tablets and other Apple and Android 4.0 or later devices.

Kennesaw is first city in Georgia to earn IAS Building Department Accreditation.

The city of Kennesaw, Georgia, Building Services Department is the first in the state to achieve accreditation of its building department from the International Accreditation Service (IAS). To earn the accreditation, the department demonstrated industry-best practices in its permitting, plan review and inspection services.

Edgefield County, S.C., staff is 100-percent ICC certified.

One-hundred percent of the Edgefield County, S.C., Building and Planning staff have earned professional certifications from the International Code Council. ICC's certification program is the oldest, largest and most prestigious credentialing program for construction code administration and enforcement professionals in the United States. The Edgefield County staff earned the 100-percent designation through the Get Everyone Certified Challenge presented by ICC and Target Corporation.

OBOA holds annual conference, elects new officers.

ICC Board of Directors President Guy Tomberlin, Vice President Alex "Cash" Olszowy, Directors Jeff Bechtold and Bill Bryant, and Government Relations Regional Manager Corey M. Roblee participated in the Ohio Building Officials Association 2015 Annual Conference in Dublin, Ohio. Olszowy addressed the membership during the opening ceremonies. IABO holds annual conference; Wray honored for years of service.

The Indiana Association of Building Officials held its 2015 Annual Conference at the Blue Chip Resort in Michigan City, Ind. ICC Board Director Jeff Bechtold and Government Relations Senior Regional Manager Corey M. Roblee were in attendance. Competition seeks energy-efficient designs of NYC icons.

More and more people are making a commitment to the Architecture 2030 Challenge to radically reduce energy consumption in the built environment and help solve the world's climate crisis. Coming in October, the Reimagining a New York City Icon competition invites architects and engineers to redesign the facade of one of New York City's most recognized landmarks with the goal of achieving greater energy performance. A $15,000 cash prize will be awarded to the design judged to exhibit the most innovation, energy efficiency and aesthetic integrity.

DOE releases common definition for zero energy buildings, campuses and communities.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reached a significant milestone in bringing the building community together by releasing a common definition for a zero energy building, or what is also referred to as a "net zero energy" or "zero net energy" building. After leading an extensive stakeholder engagement process over the past year and a half, the DOE released its findings in the recently published A Common Definition for Zero Energy Buildings, which states that a zero energy building is "an energy-efficient building where, on a source energy basis, the actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the on-site renewable exported energy."

Veteran fire service member Gallagher passes away.

ICC Member Brian Gallagher, of Phoenixville, Pa., passed away on Aug. 28. He was 59. Gallagher joined the Phoenixville Fire Department in 1976 and through the years he took on several roles, including Lieutenant, Training Officer and overseeing the department's junior program. Gallagher became Assistant Chief for the second time in 2014 then Deputy Chief earlier this year. He spent his entire career in the field of emergency services and life safety, beginning at the Chester County Department of Emergency Services where he would later serve as Deputy Chief Fire Marshal. He also was a code enforcement official for several municipalities. Read more.
