U.S. Rep. Lipinski voices support of building energy codes.

In recognition of the importance of building energy codes, U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski — one of the few engineers in Congress — has voiced his support for better energy efficiency in the nation's built environment. "As a member of the High Performance Building Caucus, I recognize the need to pursue cost effective means to promote energy efficiency," he said. "The model residential and commercial building energy codes developed by the International Code Council and ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, have the potential to benefit both consumers and the environment."

Code Essentials of the 2015 IBC.

The prescriptive option is the traditional way of dealing with existing buildings. Any new work that is done must comply with the currently adopted codes, but the existing building is not required to be improved to a point of complying with the current code. However, if the building official determines that there are dangerous conditions in the building, the official can require repairs be made to bring the building into a safe condition.

(This information is excerpted from the Building Code Essentials based on the 2015 International Building Code.)
