Code Essentials of the 2015 IEBC.

Performance Method. This method — summarized in the 2015 International Existing Building Code (IECC) — covers all types of work to an existing building; including provisions for repairs, alterations, change of occupancies and additions. It is a scoring system that evaluates three major categories: fire safety, means of egress and general safety.

ICC-ES Evaluation Reports ensure proof of compliance to ICC 500-2014.

ICC-ES evaluates the design and construction criteria of storm shelters for high wind, hurricane and tornado requirements required by ICC-500-2014: ICC/NSSA Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters; FEMA P-320; and FEMA P-361. Code officials trust and rely on ICC-ES reports because they allow them to instantly approve products with confidence and peace of mind.

NRMCA creates model legislation encouraging states to make state-owned buildings safer and more resilient.

The threat of wildfire is increasing in the U.S. In 2015, more than 68,000 wildfires burned more than 4,636 structures and 10 million acres — the highest number of acres burned on record. The annual estimates on structure loss due to wildfire have increased dramatically for more than six decades. Last month, during National Building Safety Month, President Obama signed an Executive Order on Wildland-Urban Interface Federal Risk Mitigation. NRMCA has authored model legislation that will ensure that state-owned property enjoys the same protections and will be advocating for its passage at the state and local level.

New "PMG Tailgate Training" on 2015 International Mechanical Code.

We all know the importance of proper support for dryer ducts. Exhaust ducts are required to be supported at 4 foot intervals and secured in place. The insert end of the duct shall extend into the adjoining duct or fitting in the direction of airflow. What is missed quite often is that the fastener protrusion has exceeded the maximum 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) into the inside of the duct. Any protrusion will collect some lint. Even smooth duct walls will collect lint. However if dryer ducts are not allowed to be mechanically fastened, the only method to prevent separation of the joint is duct tape. Duct tape should never be depended upon as the sole means of securing duct systems because it is a sealing means, not a fastening means.

Take the Pool Safely Pledge to save lives this summer.

Midsummer is a great time to remind parents and caregivers that cooling off in a swimming pool or spa also means taking vital steps to ensure children are staying safer in and around the water. This year, the Pool Safely campaign is hosting its third annual Pool Safely Pledge Week, July 18-24, to remind all adults and children to take the Pool Safely Pledge and adopt simple safety steps to save lives in and around pools and spas every day. ICC Chapter Presidents, please let us know when your organization takes the pledge.

ICC provides input for ESS Compliance Guide Task Group.

Since July 2015, an energy storage safety initiative has been underway involving codes, standards and regulations (CSR) impacting the timely deployment of safe energy storage systems (ESS). A CSR working group has monitored the development of standards and model codes, and a task force under the CSR working group was formed to address compliance with current CSR. Through their efforts, the "Energy Storage System Guide for Compliance with Safety Codes and Standards" was developed. International Code Council Government Relations Senior Vice President Sara Yerkes is a member of the Compliance Guide Working Group Task Force.
