ICC meets with global building safety leaders.

ICC Senior Staff Engineer Beth Tubbs attended a meeting of the Inter-Jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee (IRCC) in Oslo, Norway, in an international exchange of ideas on how to deal with emerging issues affecting building regulations such as resiliency, sustainability, existing buildings, refugee housing and accessibility.

The IRCC consists of international members from the regulatory drafting bodies of 14 represented countries focused upon the development of performance-based building regulatory systems. ICC has participated at some level with the IRCC for 20 years, and plans to continue as it is an excellent resource to understand the bigger picture of building regulations.

Code essentials of atriums.

Requirements for atriums were introduced into the codes in the early 1980s, and are typically an opening between three or more stories of a building. Building designers wanted to have floors open to each other over several stories. Atriums create challenges similar to high rises in that it is difficult for fire fighters to control fires within them. Therefore, smoke control is an important aspect of an atrium design.
