Code Council Members and partners include scientists who are leading the way in designing and constructing safe, efficient, and resilient homes and buildings. Up-to-date building safety codes and standards enable the technology to be incorporated into buildings while ensuring the safety of lives, properties and investments.

Code enforcement & economic development go hand in hand

Building Safety Month is a time for code enforcement officials to draw attention to the codes and standards that ensure the safety and integrity of structures and protect communities. It's also a time to recognize the collaboration between developers and development services agencies that work tirelessly year-round to review, inspect and ensure that projects are designed with safety as the highest priority.

Deadline approaches for service on code and cycle-related committees

The Code Council issued a Call for Committee for 2018/2019 Cycle code committees and related cycle committees. The application deadline for 2018/2019 cycle-related committees is next week on June 1.

Annual Conference features an impressive line-up of speakers

Did you know that Archie Griffin of the Cincinnati Bengals and Ohio State is the only player in the history of college football to win the Heisman Trophy twice? These days, Griffin is a senior advisor at Ohio State University, and ICC Members attending the 2017 Annual Conference will be able to hear from Griffin firsthand.

The Ohio Building Officials Association is excited to host a Welcome Event in Columbus, Ohio, for the 2017 International Code Council Annual Business Meeting and Conference. The International Code Council met with representatives from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP), National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at its Washington, D.C., Governmental Affairs Office to discuss opportunities for collaboration across the organizations. Significant changes to the 2015 IBC

Shafts are used to enclose vertical openings within a building in order to prevent the spread of smoke or fire from one story to the next. A clarification to Section 717.1.1 (Ducts Transitioning between Shafts) of the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) states that ducts are now expressly allowed to exit a shaft, transition horizontally, and then enter another shaft without continuous shaft construction.

Your chance to learn more about solar technologies

The Interstate Renewable Energy Council is presenting a half-day training session July 12 at Intersolar North America in San Francisco with the International Code Council's Solar Rating & Certification Corporation. National solar code and technical experts will discuss the most recent electric and fire codes and standards updates for solar safety, and their impact on code officials and other professionals, including fire officials.

Building codes can influence design decisions and are critical to the practice of architecture. With this in mind, the American Institute of Architects encourages architects to be engaged in the process of developing building codes. NIBS becomes ICC Preferred Provider

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) earned recognition as a Preferred Education Provider by the International Code Council. By becoming an ICC Preferred Education Provider, the Institute can now offer the nation's building safety professionals, among them more than 40,000 ICC-certified individuals, an opportunity to attend approved Institute courses and earn credit for their continuing education.

SG BLOCKS first to be evaluated to ICC-ES AC462

ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) issued ESR-3764 to SG Blocks for its structural building material from shipping containers, providing evidence they comply with the code requirements of the 2015 International Building Code and International Residential Code. SG Blocks Building Modules are site-specific, custom-designed, factory-built modules that are transported to a job site and assembled to form a completed building.

Interesting global construction trivia

Many Americans install alarms to alert them to the presence of carbon monoxide, a toxic gas that is invisible and odorless. However, carbon monoxide is used in modified atmosphere packaging systems in the U.S. to make meat products such as beef, pork and fish appear fresher. This practice is banned in Canada, Japan, Singapore and the European Union.
