The officers for the 2017–2018 International Code Council Board of Directors, elected by ICC members during the 2017 Annual Business Meeting, are President Jay Elbettar, Vice President William R. Bryant and Secretary/Treasurer Greg Wheeler.



ICC voting members elect 2017–2018 board officers, directors

International Code Council voting members elected Board officers and directors during the association's Annual Business Meeting at the 2017 Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Jay Elbettar, P.E., CBO, building official, city of Mission Viejo, Calif., was elected President of the ICC board. Bill Bryant, MCP, CBO, assistant director of the Inspections and Permits Department of Anne Arundel County, Md., was elected Vice President, and Greg Wheeler, chief building official, city of Thornton, Colo., was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Voting members also elected representatives to sectional and at-large positions on the board.

Stuart Tom, building official, Yorba Linda, Calif., and David "Kris" Bridges, building official, city of Martinsville, Va., were elected to positions as sectional directors. Mike Boso, chief building and zoning official, city of Grove City, Ohio, and David Spencer, building official, city of North Bend, Wash., were elected to the board. Jeff Bechtold, senior building official, Kenton County, Ky., and Donny Phipps, CBO, CFM, director of building codes and inspections, Richland County, S.C., were re-elected to the board.

David Collins presented with ICC's Bobby J. Fowler Award

David Collins, chair of the ICC Sustainability, Energy & High Performance Building Code Action Committee, was presented the prestigious Bobby J. Fowler Award during the Annual Banquet at ICC's 2017 Annual Conference. The Fowler Award honors the memory of the first chairman of the ICC Board of Directors who led the charge to consolidate three regional model code organizations into one association. The award is presented to individuals whose contributions to the building safety industry advance the Code Council's goals to achieve a safer built environment.

ICC honors individuals for contributions to safety and resiliency in the built environment

The International Code Council honored several individuals for their contributions to safety and resiliency in the built environment during the Awards Luncheon at the Annual Conference. Becky Baker, director of building safety for Jefferson County, Colo., received the Gerald H. Jones Code Official of the Year Award. Gary Lewis was presented the ICC Fire Service Award. The ICC Community Service Award was presented to Women in Code Enforcement and Development and Permit Tech Nation, and the city of San Jose, Calif. Bill Bracken received the ICC Educator of the Year Award.

Chapter presidents honor peers and groupthink on leadership

At the Chapter Presidents' Meeting, Chapter Merit Award winners — the Maine Building Officials and Inspectors Association and the Utah ICC Chapter — were recognized. The Regions Spotlight Award was given to ICC Region II, and the Chapter of the Year Award was given to the Connecticut Building Officials Association. After the awards were distributed, attendees were encouraged to have roundtable discussions on the topic "What should a new Chapter Leadership Manual contain?" In addition to the suggested topics assigned to each table, participants were free to move to the table with the topic of their choice, or to suggest other topics of particular interest to them.

 
 
     
 

ICC hears from the Federal Code Users Working Group

In August, the International Code Council hosted a meeting of the Federal Code Users Working Group, which includes representatives from the Department of Energy, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Federal Emergency Management Agency, General Services Administration, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and others. The group discussed a number of important topics, including the code development process, manufactured home installations requirements, fire safety, and flood and wind provisions in the International Codes.

 
 
     
 

ICC's Dorothy Harris receives honorary NYSFMIA membership

International Code Council Vice President of State & Local Government Relations Dorothy Harris received an honorary membership to the New York State Fire Marshal's and Inspector's Association (NYSFMIA) for her 20-plus years of dedication and involvement with fire prevention and building codes in New York State.

CCSC meets to discuss economic benefits of current code adoption

Dozens of Coalition for Current Safety Codes (CCSC) members recently met in Rosslyn, Va., and via teleconference to discuss the latest data on the economic benefits of current codes, and to report on code adoption updates from around the nation, with particular focus on Florida, North Carolina and Minnesota. Several federal agencies have current reports and data on the economic benefits of adopting current building and safety codes, including the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In addition, the National Institute of Building Sciences is expected to release its update of the 2005 Multi-hazard Mitigation Report in the coming months. There was a lengthy discussion about recent Executive Orders with special focus on the potential impact of EO 13690, which rescinds certain flood standards. The Code Council, the National Fire Protection Association and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association updated all members on the progress and expected dates for the next code publications as well.

 
 
     
 

ICC-ES PMG accredited to certify products for the Mexican market

ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) is now accredited by entidad mexicana de acreditacion to certify plumbing products to the Official Mexican Standards (NOMs). This accreditation, coupled with its American National Standards Institute and Standards Council Canada accreditations, allows ICC-ES to certify products for the entire North American market. Manufacturers that choose ICC-ES PMG to certify their products for Mexico will be authorized to mark their products with the official NOM emblem.
