ICC announces new award for innovation in code administration.

The International Code Council Family of Companies created a new honor to acknowledge public safety creativity in the built environment: the ICC Innovation in Code Administration Award, which recognizes building and fire departments for innovation in the delivery of code administration services in their communities. The award program is sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs — Fire and Life Safety Section, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, and the Code Council.

Code Council & PMI to jointly advance mutual industry interests.

During Design & Construction Week, the International Code Council and Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding detailing ways in which the two organizations will work together to explore the promotion of mutual interests within the industry as related to education, training, advocacy and harmonization of North American product standards.

In addition, when mutually beneficial, the two organizations will identify and promote new and existing sustainability opportunities and services collaboratively to their members and the industry, including ICC's green training programs.

Water efficiency provisions training in Saudi Arabia.

As a continuous advocate of the built environment's critical role in providing safer and smarter water use in neighborhoods and communities nationally and globally, the International Code Council attended a training event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focusing on an "Overview of Water Efficiency in Codes" and provided an overview of the 2015 Water Efficiency Provision, which is currently in the International Plumbing and Green Construction Codes.

The Code Council recently signed a historic agreement supporting The Standardization Organization for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf efforts to develop a unified Gulf Building Code for the region, which will be based on the Saudi Building Code and will incorporate the latest provisions from the 2015 International Codes.

Falcon Stainless joins ICC-ES PMG's new Affiliate Program.

ICC Evaluation Service welcomed Falcon Stainless, Inc., as the first PMG (plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas) client to take advantage of its new Affiliate Program, which supports ICC-ES PMG clients by increasing the visibility and awareness of their products in the PMG industry. "ICC-ES is pleased to see Falcon Stainless take advantage of this affiliate program, offering manufacturers opportunities to increase awareness of their ICC-ES PMG listings," said ICC-ES PMG Director Dawn LaFleur-Qualley.

DOE updates requirements for low-rise residential Federal buildings to 2015 IECC.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has published an update to the Energy Efficiency Standards for the Design and Construction of New Federal Low-Rise Residential Buildings to the International Code Council 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The DOE issued the requirement as a final rule, basing its decision primarily on the DOE's determination of the cost-effectiveness of both the 2012 and 2015 IECC.

Wythe County students reflect success of HSTTP initiative.

A group of Wythe County Technology Center students — introduced to the Code Council's High School Technical Training Program (HSTTP) — recently earned certificates of achievement for their knowledge of the International Residential Code. "We are hoping to get kids involved in this type of program because the work force is going to be low in the next five years, said Town of Wytheville Building Official Charles Vannatter. "Veteran contractors are going to retire and we need young people to step in."

Significant changes to the 2015 IFC.

An addition to Section 604.2.6 of the 2015 International Fire Code (IFC) states that essential electrical systems must comply with IBC Chapter 27 and NFPA 99. This change provides a clear path for the designer to know which standards apply when he or she is designing an essential electrical system for a Group I-2 occupancy.

Elbettar presents Code Council overview to Orange Empire Chapter.

Code Council Board of Directors Vice President Jay Elbettar outlined the association's organizational structure, opportunities for code official participation and new initiatives underway in support of Members during the Orange Empire Chapter's Jan. 19 meeting at the Code Council's Western Regional Office in Brea, Calif.

 
 
     
 

East Bay Chapter supports Safety 2.0 initiative through scholarships.

The East Bay Chapter of ICC held its Annual Banquet and Officer Installation on Jan. 21. During the event, the Chapter presented several students enrolled in construction-related programs at Laney Community College with scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 to assist them in pursuing their education in a field that supports the building profession. Chapter President Sharon Goei acknowledged the Chapter's commitment to supporting Code Council Immediate Past President Cash Olszowy's Safety 2.0 initiative toward the younger generation of code officials.
