New report confirms that updated, well-enforced building codes work

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety released its 2018 Rating the States report, which assesses the progress of 18 hurricane-prone coastal states along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Coast in strengthening their residential building codes. Florida's building codes, ranked among the strongest in the nation and based on the International Codes, were ranked first for building code strength. Read more.

 
 
     
 

Join the #CODEversation

Do you follow the Code Council on Twitter? If so, you're in for some excitement this month. If not, now is a great time to start! We are starting a new monthly social media feature, Twitter chats. With the goal of creating more avenues for engagement with our online community, we will host a Twitter chat every month using the hashtag #CODEversation. An ICC staff member or building safety professional will facilitate an online conversation centered around a building safety theme.

ICC Vice President of Fire Activities Rob Neale will host our first chat about fire safety at 12:00 p.m. ET on April 25. Then, on May 14 ICC Government Relations Regional Manager and Alliance for National & Community Resilience Executive Director Bryan Soukup will host our Building Safety Month chat focused on disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Significant changes to the 2018 International Building Code

The 2015 International Building Code (IBC) introduced scoping provisions regarding the accessibility of recreational facilities so that persons with mobility impairments can participate to the best of their ability. A clarification to Section 1110.4.13 (Access to play Areas for Children) of the 2018 IBC states that access to children's play areas is now specifically required where those areas contain play components. William "Shannon" Morris, chief code enforcement officer of Kent County, officially filed to run for the 30th District seat in the Delaware House of Representatives. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is launching an effort to engage industry companies in a dialogue about advocation for women in construction and their path to leadership roles. Their first outreach is a national survey that will help NAWIC understand what employers are looking for and identify the barriers and opportunities that exist for their members.
