Significant changes to the 2018 International Residential Code An air barrier is an important component of the building thermal envelope to reduce air infiltration into the dwelling unit as well as exfiltration of air from the conditioned portions of the building. A clarification to Section N1101.6 (Definition of Air Barrier) of the 2018 International Residential Code states that the definition for air barrier has been revised for clarification and the duplicate definition for continuous air barrier has been removed. New simplified provisions for seismic design buildings Forty-four of the 50 states in the U.S. have areas classified as Seismic Design Category B. It is important that communities adopt and enforce building codes and design standards for protection of buildings from earthquakes, and that design engineers fully comply with code requirements. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program unveiled its FEMA P-1091 Recommended Simplified Provisions for Seismic Design Category B Buildings, which helps structural engineers and local building officials with a set of simplified seismic design guidelines.
