2009 Building Safety Week Gains Worldwide Support

Building Safety Week 2009
More than 2,600 individuals in 17 countries joined the International Code Council, the ICC Foundation and supporting partners to participate in the online "I Support Building Safety Week" campaign. In addition, governors, mayors and county officials from 31 states issued proclamations, official statements and letters of recognition for 2009 Building Safety Week. News outlets across the U.S. acknowledged the importance of building codes and the professionals who enforce them. more>>

Volunteer CORPS Provides Service during Building Safety Week

Volunteers throughout the International Code Council community showed their commitment to Building Safety Week by participating in the Code Officials Volunteer CORPS’ (COVC) Day of Service. The COVC program recognizes, celebrates and supports volunteer service by Code Council members and staff. Chapters, members and their family members logged hundreds of hours and shared their stories in the COVC database. more>>

Code of Honor Scholarship Program Receives First Donations
Thanks to the American Institute of Architects and Target Corporation for generous donations to the new ICC Foundation Code of Honor Scholarship program. The donations will help underwrite training and professional development for Code Council members by expanding participation in education and training opportunities, and the code development process at the ICC Code Development Hearings. more>>
   
Applications Received for ICCF Sponsored Scholarships

The ICC Foundation received numerous applications for the 2009 Sponsored Scholarships program, which is managed by the Foundation and funded by Code Council Chapters and ICCF contributors. The scholarships included the William J. Tangye Scholarship, J.W. “Bill” Neese Scholarship, C.D. Howard Scholarship and the Charlie O’Meilia Scholarship. The Foundation will announce the winners on August 26. more>>


ICCF Represented at Safe Homes Leadership Forum

ICC Foundation and Code Council representatives participated in the Safe Homes for All Leadership Forum in Washington D.C. Forum delegates outlined a set of principles to advance their vision for a new approach to disaster safety, which included that:2009 Building Safety Week Kit

  • pre-disaster mitigation become the linchpin of disaster safety public policy,
  • greater attention be paid to the disaster safety needs of low-income Americans,
  • green building construction and retrofits be aligned with disaster safety,
  • greater steps be taken to protect the environment and reduce the impact of natural disasters, and
  • existing and emerging technologies be leveraged to strengthen new and existing structures using affordable measures. more>>
