Building Safety Month: Commemorating
A 30-Year Legacy of Leadership

After three decades of success, the Code Council and ICC Foundation (ICCF) have expanded Building Safety Week into a month-long campaign that will be celebrated in May to increase awareness of the critical importance of building and designing safe, sustainable and green structures in the United States and around the world. BASF—The Chemical Company is the millennium sponsor of Building Safety Month 2010 that includes the weekly themes:

Week 1—Energy & Green Building
Week 2—Disaster Safety & Mitigation
Week 3—Fire Safety & Awareness
Week 4—Backyard Safety

Building Safety Month Toolkits are available for download. You can participate in the "I-Support" Campaign, become a fan of Building Safety Month on Facebook, or follow the Building Safety Twitter page. Don’t forget to submit proclamations and Building Safety Month photographs. click to continue


Deadline for IGCC Public Comments
Is May 14

ICC seeks feedback on Public Version 1.0 of the IGCC. The public comment period ends May 14. Following the consideration and approval of public comments, Public Version 2.0 will be posted for code change submittals beginning November 3. The deadline for code change proposals is January 3. Proposed changes will be considered at Code Development and Final Action Hearings in Dallas and Phoenix respectively during 2011. Dowload a copy of the IGCC.


Deadline Approaching for Updated Membership Information

The Code Council’s Final Action Hearings are scheduled for May 14-23 in Dallas. In accordance with Council Policy 28, new and updated membership information must be received no less than 10 days prior to the first day of the hearings in order for members to exercise their voting privileges. The membership deadline for these hearings is close of business on May 4. more>>


EARTH DAY: ICC Advances Sustainability Efforts

The Code Council and its stakeholders have a long history in promoting the contribution of codes and code officials to a more sustainable planet. ICC provides guidance on how everyone who impacts buildings and their construction can be a better environmental steward. Also, every day is Earth Day for plumbing and mechanical officials.


Call for Comments on Bleacher and Log Structure Standards

The Reference Standard, Bleacher and Log Structure Committees are accepting applications for new members to monitor code activity with suggested revisions, additions or comments as they develop the next editions of the ICC 300 and ICC 400 standards. The deadline is May 25.


Update: Gas Purging Requirements

The Code Council awaits a decision by the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee Z223, which oversees the development of the National Fuel Gas Code, before it can update Section 406.7 of the International Fuel Gas Code. Click here to read more.

  Industry Leaders Partner for Dwelling Fire Sprinkler Contractor Accreditation
More than 3,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives each year to fires and 84 percent of those die in their home. While smoke alarms provide an early warning signal, sprinklers installed in ceilings respond to fires while they are still small. The 2009 International Residential Code requires newly constructed one- and two-family houses to include life-saving fire sprinkler systems. The CPSE, Code Council, and NFSA signed a joint memorandum to address the upswing in demand for accredited professionals to install residential sprinkler systems. click to continue

  IAS Accredits Beaufort County in South Carolina
The Beaufort County Inspection and Code Enforcement Department is the first building department in South Carolina to earn Building Department Accreditation from the International Accreditation Service (IAS). The accreditation is based on the IAS Accreditation Criteria for Building Departments/Code Enforcement Agencies (AC251). The accreditation verifies that the Beaufort County Inspection and Code Enforcement Department is operating at the highest legal, ethical and technical standards.

  Building Safety Month PSA Available for Use
The ICC Foundation is offering free DVDs of the new Building Safety Month PSA starring Danny Lipford (left) to the first 100 members or chapters who request them. In the PSA, Lipford, host and executive producer of the nationally syndicated television show Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford, delivers an inspiring message about the critical role of code officials and building codes in general. Additionally, downloadable versions are available at www.buildingsafetymonth.org. The new PSA is licensed for use to any television station.
