Report: Indiana State Fair Stage Met Criteria of Class 1 Temporary Structure
An independent assessment of the August 13, 2011, Indiana State Fair Collapse Incident in which seven people were killed and more than 40 injured has found that sections of the International Building and Fire Codes pertaining to temporary structures were exempted at the time of the state of Indiana's adoption of the 2008 IBC and IFC. The independent study, commissioned by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels and conducted by a Witt Associates team consisting of subject matter experts in code enforcement, emergency management, law enforcement, outdoor venue public safety, emergency medical services and meteorology, also found, however, that the collapsed stage met the criteria of a "Class 1 Temporary Structure" even though it was exempt from most aspects of building inspection in the state.
