Significant Code Changes to the 2012 International Building Code
Exits are now permitted to be arranged where they serve a portion of a story instead of requiring that all of the required exits from the story be accessible to all of the occupants. This exception recognizes that in some building arrangements an exit may serve a specific area, such as being within an individual tenant space and may not be useable by other occupants on this story. The previous requirement often resulted in designs where access was provided to every exit required from the story even though the exiting layout was such that certain exits served distinct portions of the story and those portions may have only required access to one or two exits based on the occupant load of that area. Better Building Practices Stand Alone in "Tornado Alley"
Civil Engineer David Prevatt, Assistant Professor of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the University of Florida, is convinced that two homes in the Featherstone Community in Moore, Okla., that survived a direct hit from an EF5 tornado are still standing because they were built stronger than most in Oklahoma and the rest of "tornado alley" — the region stretching from Texas to Iowa that accounts for roughly a fourth of all U.S. tornadoes. "Oklahoma should follow the example of Florida after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and adopt a tougher building code to reduce damage in the future," said Prevatt. "This notion that we cannot engineer buildings economically to withstand tornado loads is a fallacy. Why should we be surprised if a house collapses if the load is four times more powerful than it was designed to withstand?" Continue reading story

U.S. Construction Unemployment Rate Lowest May Level in Five Years
Construction employment increased by 7,000 last month, pushing the industry's unemployment rate down to the lowest May level in five years. The positive jobs report underscores the need to address potential shortages of skilled workers since formerly unemployed construction workers are finding jobs in other sectors, retiring or going back to school. If the industry continues to add jobs, future worker shortages could occur unless education officials rebuild skills-based, or vocational, educational programs designed to help prepare students for careers in construction and manufacturing. Addressing this need, the Code Council has a new program for high school students participating in technical training to receive an introduction to the model building codes, including code interpretation, application and administration.
