Industry Experts Honored for Contributions to Safety in the Built Environment

Anderson, Brothers, Francis, Leyden Recognized as ICC Honorary Members International Code Council Members awarded Honorary Memberships to four distinguished individuals for demonstrating outstanding service to the ICC or one of the association's legacy model code organizations. Members approved the nominations of Gregori Anderson, James L. Brothers, Sam Francis and Jack Leyden during the Code Council's 2013 Annual Conference in Atlantic City, N.J. Honorary Members have voting rights and receive all ICC Member benefits. Anderson is Director of Building Safety and Regulatory Services for Chatham County, Ga. He served two, three-year terms on the ICC Board of Directors, chairing several committees. He has more than 25 years of experience as a code official. His professional background includes training as an architect, historic preservation and construction management. Brothers, a past ICC Board President, serves on the Alabama Residential and Energy Codes Board. He was Director of the Decatur, Ala., Building Department until his retirement with more than 25 years of experience as a code official. He has served on the Legislative and Codes Advisory Council for the American Society of Interior Design, and is Past President of the North Alabama Code Officials Association and the Code Officials Association of Alabama. He is recipient of the Alabama Code Official of the Year Award, and the Code Officials Association of Alabama Distinguished Service Award. Francis is a regional director of the American Wood Council. He responds to countless requests for help with code issues and wood design standards from code officials, builders and designers. His career began performing mechanical inspections and plan reviews for the city of Dayton, Ohio. He also served as Chief Mechanical Inspector and Chief Building Inspector. He has taught for code official associations, authored numerous code-related articles and served on several ICC committees. Leyden, a former ICC Board Member, is the Rhode Island State Building Code Commissioner. He has held the positions of Structural Building Inspector, Director, Building Official, and Chief of Structures and Zoning and Alternate Building Official for the cities of Providence, Cranston and North Kingstown. He is one of only five individuals to be a Certified Building Official by both the International Code Council and the State of Rhode Island. Membership Councils Hold Meetings in Atlantic City The Membership Councils offer ICC Members a place to come together and be a more powerful force shaping ICC, their industries, their careers, and their futures. Five discipline-specific Membership Councils allow ICC Membership to share their expertise, voice, and vision with their peers. The Membership Councils held a combined meeting on Sunday, Sept. 29 at the ICC Annual Conference in Atlantic City, N.J. Attendees voted on the election/re-election of Governing Committee Members for each Membership Council, listened to an update on the strategic initiative Vision 2023, and received valuable information on certification and testing changes for 2014. Climate Change and Extreme Weather and How Might Building Codes Be Affected Dave Jones (pictured left), founder and chief executive officer of Storm Center Communications, Inc., spoke on the relation of climate change to building codes — "Climate Change and Extreme Weather: What's Going On and How Might Building Codes Be Affected?" — during the Members Luncheon. A timely topic for those Members who come from areas that were impacted by Superstorm Sandy, or the recent Colorado floods, and who have seen (or will see) the impact of weather-related natural disasters on the built environment. |
