  Disaster Response Network Supports Storm-Damaged Communities
Anticipating the needs of jurisdictions for assistance in the aftermath of the recent tornadoes, the Disaster Response Network is active. Jurisdictions can access a database of volunteers to assist with building damage assessment, inspections and other code-related functions. Jurisdictions can call the Disaster Support Hotline at 888-ICC-SAFE (888-422-7233), ext. 5238. More information is available on the home page of the ICC website. Click on the "Disaster Network" tab in the "ICC Important Information" section.

TBOA, IDABO Honor Code Officials of the Year

Lebanon Building Inspector Ray Hubner is the recipient of the Tennessee Building Officials Association's (TBOA) Code Official of the Year Award. He was recognized during the Chapter's 50th Annual Conference held in Gatlinburg. The Idaho the Idaho Association of Building Officials (IDABO) recently recognized Kootenai County Building Official Robert Ankersmit as the 2012 Building Code Official of the Year for his significant contribution to the building profession. The scholarship application period is now open and will close on Friday, July 12. Code of Honor professional development scholarships help to ensure the I-Codes reflect the consensus view of officials at all levels of government by providing funding to Governmental Member Voting Representatives seeking to attend and participate in the Public Comment Hearings, Oct. 2–10, in Atlantic City, N.J. Significant Code Changes to the 2009 A117.1 Accessibility Standard
A new exception in Section 1004.11.3.1 clearly addresses the need for only a single lavatory to be accessible within the same bathroom in a Type B unit, Option A bathroom. The addition of this exception helps to resolve a question that previously existed regarding whether a bathroom with multiple lavatories required all the fixtures to be accessible or just one. The addition of this exception continues the committee's other changes that have helped to clarify that only one of each type of fixture is required to be accessible. Experts Predict Three U.S. Landfalls during 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season
After a devastating blow from Superstorm Sandy in October of 2012, residents and homeowners on the Atlantic coast should anticipate another active 2013 hurricane season, according to AccuWeather.com. Experts are predicting 16 named tropical storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes for the Atlantic season that begins on June 1. Of these, three are predicted to make landfall in the United States. Increased Housing Demand Set to Spur Job Growth
Increasing demand across the country for new home construction could see the construction industry add 500,000 jobs this year and 700,000 in 2014, according to Bloomberg News. The reason for the increased demand for people in the industry is a direct result of the rebound in home construction. The National Association of Homebuilders estimates that three jobs are created for every single-family home that is built. Moody's Analytics is also projecting that increased demand for housing will result in almost 1.2 million homes being built in 2013. Continue reading story

Meet the "Challenge" by Having 100% of Your Staff Certified by ICC
Jurisdictions are encouraged to raise the professionalism and commitment of their departments by having 100 percent of their technical staff earn ICC Certifications through the "Get Everyone Certified Challenge" presented by the Code Council and Target. Three code enforcement departments with 100-percent newly certified staff will be awarded $1,100 credits for ICC educational offerings, such as training and training materials, during the Code Council's 2013 Annual Conference Sept. 29–Oct. 2 in Atlantic City.
