Membership Council Meetings Slated for April 26–27 in Memphis

The Code Council's Building Official, Fire Service, PMG Official and Sustainability Membership Councils will hold meetings prior to the start of the Group C Committee Action Hearings in Memphis. The Building Official and Fire Service Membership Councils will meet on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. CST and on Sunday, April 27, from 8 a.m.–Noon CST. The PMG Official and Sustainability Membership Councils will meet on Sunday, April 27, from 8 a.m.–Noon CST. ICC's Membership Councils were formed after Members asked to have a greater role influencing how ICC serves to enhance their work performance, careers and professions. IMT and ICC Present the 2014 Standard Bearers Award
Now in its third year, the Standard Bearers Award will be presented for the first time by the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) and the International Codes Council. The award recognizes state and local jurisdictions and individuals for energy codes compliance and energy use reduction.

Building Safety Month Campaign Materials Available
Building Safety Month is in May and the Code Council is offering educational and informational resources to help increase awareness of the public about building safety. Promotional materials include a sample proclamation, template news release, kids activity sheets and stickers, posters, and brochures. Printed campaign materials are available for purchase through the ICC Store and many items are available as free, downloadable tools on the ICC website. The hearings take place April 27–May 3 at the Cook Convention Center, Memphis, Tenn., and offer Code Council Members and others an opportunity to voice opinions and offer expertise to help develop the 2015 International Green Construction Code. Assembly motion voting will take place online May 19–30 through cdpACCESS after the Committee Action Hearings. Smoke Alarm Mistake Shows the Risks in Creating a New User Interface
Next-generation user interfaces will be one of the keys to the emerging wearables markets, to the increasingly connected smart home, and to moving technology and devices further into the mainstream. However, launching new types of user interfaces can be tricky. Case in point: last week Nest decided to halt the sale of its new Protect smart smoke alarm because it found a flaw in the sensor and gesture-based user interface. The function that enabled users to pause an alarm by waving at it could also be unintentionally triggered by other types of movement. The fear was that if there was a fire and the alarm was going off, a nearby movement could falsely pause the alarm.

ICC Recertification CEU Improvements and Methods for Obtaining CEUs
The Code Council is adjusting its recertification program to address CEU accruals for cdpACCESS effective immediately. Other modifications in the program include minor adjustments to CEU accrual limits, CEU accruals for Preferred Provider Network (PPN) training and related minimum CEU requirements for ICC and PPN training. The implementation of the minimum training requirements will be phased in through a period of over two years to allow for a smooth transition and to not create a hardship for certified individuals.
