ICC-ES PMG Clarifies NSF 61 Annex G Versus California 0.25 Percent Lead Legislation

As manufacturers prepare products for compliance with the 0.25-percent California lead legislation, some listing agencies claim they can certify these products in accordance with NSF 61 Annex G entitled, "Weighted Average Lead Content Evaluation Procedure to a 0.25% Lead Requirement." At least one listing agency maintains it already has certified manufacturers' products. The problem is there is no current existing protocol to certify products to the California lead legislation. more>>

Any plan developed to this guideline shall use an "equivalency" approach to assign seismic performance factors, by verifying equivalence to a defined LFR system. more>>

Clarification on the Use of Allowable Stress Design
ICC-ES staff has been requested to clarify how the Conversion Factor, "α", is to be used in the allowable stress design (ASD) equations noted in ICC-ES evaluation reports on post-installed anchorage to concrete. The ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Mechanical Anchors in Concrete Elements (AC193) and the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Post-installed Adhesive Anchors in Concrete Elements (AC308) were revised in February 2008 to include an amended method for converting Strength Design (SD) capacities to Allowable Strength Design (ASD) capacities using "α". more>>

How-To Guidelines
for Report Holders

When an ICC-ES Evaluation Report is issued, the manufacturer of the product may use the ICC-ES mark and report number to promote the product. ICC-ES guidelines explain proper use of the mark. ICC-ES has introduced a new mark that will be issued for all newly published Evaluation Reports. During this transition period, use of either mark will be acceptable. Helpful information regarding product labeling also is available in the ID Section of each report and approval letter.

Complete guidelines for New Reports (Section 13.0).
Complete guidelines for Legacy Reports (Section 15.0).
Report holders can find additional resources to promote their product on the ICC-ES website.

PMG Listing Expedites Approval Process
for Giles Ventless/Recirculating Hoods

Air quality is one item you can't order off the menu at your favorite restaurant—even if it's a non-smoking one. Yet it's something we all want. How is that air quality a few steps away in the kitchen with all those working griddles, rotisseries, fryers and ovens? Where are all those grease vapors and smoke going? Health codes are very strict about emissions and safety—whether it's from a smoke stack or a stack of smoked sausage. Most people are unaware of how a ventless hood improves our lungs and our lives ... or even the bottom line. more>>

ICC-ES SAVE Program Announces First Verification of Sustainability Claim

ICC-ES SAVE Program
SAVE provides a trusted confirmation to code officials, specifiers, architects, engineers, building owners and consumers that a product has been independently verified as having the sustainable attributes claimed by the manufacturer."
—ICC-ES President Emeritus John Nosse
A renewable-based foam insulation and air barrier material using castor oil is the first product to successfully complete the ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation (SAVE) program. A Verification of Attributes Report (VAR-1002) was issued to Icynene Inc. for its LD-R-50 spray-applied cellular polyurethane foam plastic insulation. The report verifies the minimum amount of bio-based material content as determined in accordance with an ICC-ES SAVE Evaluation Guideline and provides independent confirmation of the manufacturer's claim related to the amount of biobased content. more>>

ICC-ES PMG Partners with EPA
to Promote Water Conservation

Manufacturers can turn to ICC-ES, a subsidiary of the International Code Council, for federally certified, water-efficient products to meet customer demand for green building products. The ICC-ES Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) program is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to certify products for the WaterSense Program, which identifies and promotes high-performance, water-efficient products.

"Products carrying the WaterSense label are independently tested and certified by ICC-ES to perform 20-percent more efficiently than traditional products," said ICC-ES Director of Listing Programs Bernie Soesilo. "The WaterSense label shows customers that products will not only help save money but also the environment." more>>

ICC-ES PMG Program Accredited by ANSI

The ICC-ES Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) listing program received accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The ANSI accreditation certifies the PMG program operates under ISO/IEC Guide 65—"General Requirements for Bodies Operating Product Certification Systems"—the same guidelines that certify the ICC-ES program for Evaluation Reports. more>>

Interested in Anchorage to Concrete?

With approval of AC308 in June 2005, ICC-ES staff reviewed several applications for Evaluation Reports on adhesive anchors in concrete. We acknowledge the data submittal requirements, outlined in AC308, are extensive. One item noted on several submittals concerns the differences between the extent of tests performed and the intended scope of recognition in the evaluation report. more>>

Significant Code Change to Grease Duct Wrap

Since January 1, grease duct enclosure systems recognized in ICC-ES legacy Evaluation Reports have been required to comply with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Grease Duct Enclosure Systems (AC101), ASTM E 2336 or UL 2221. Similar action is being taken by agencies that list products to those standards. As of January 1, grease duct enclosure systems are no longer recognized in ICC-ES legacy reports if their recognition was based on qualification under UL 1978. more>>

Roofs Are Covered by ICC-ES

If you are interested in determining whether a roofing product meets code requirements, look no further than the Evaluation Reports from ICC-ES. From roof shingles and tiles to sheathing and coatings, ICC-ES has more Evaluation Reports for roofing products than any other product category. ICC-ES Evaluation Reports address compliance with product standards, durability, wind resistance, fire classification and resistance to impact, all of which are code requirements. more>>

New to the Alternative Criteria Process?

Generally, it is necessary for ICC-ES to develop Acceptance Criteria for products and systems that are alternates to what is specified in the code, or that fall under code provisions that are not sufficiently clear for the issuance of an Evaluation Report. New criteria and revisions to criteria are approved by the ICC-ES Evaluation Committee during public hearings or—in selected instances—through an alternate process that involves the solicitation of public comment through the ICC-ES website. To qualify for this process, proposed criteria need to meet at least one of three requirements as stated on the ICC-ES Criteria Development webpage.

Once it is decided by staff that a proposed Acceptance Criteria can follow the alternate process, the criteria will be posted for public comment on the ICC-ES website for 30 days and simultaneously balloted to the Evaluation Committee. Proposed criteria will be posted six times a year. Please click here if you would like to receive email notification when new alternative criteria are posted. (Note: It is not necessary to resubmit your information at each new posting if you are currently receiving the notification emails.)

A Simple Way to Expedite the Process

ICC-ES staff reported that approximately 60 percent of the Q-21 Forms are incomplete when submitted.

"Required information that is consistently omitted is the third column on pages 4 and 5 (Relevant Quality Documentation [Doc. No. and Date]). In order to expedite the process of the quality control documents it is important for this column to be filled out completely, especially with the date of the document to be indicated."
Prior to publication of a new ICC-ES Evaluation Report, ICC-ES must have objective evidence that a qualifying inspection of the facilities manufacturing products to be recognized in the Evaluation Report has been successfully completed. The qualifying inspection is intended to verify that manufactured products are consistent with the product(s) described and recognized in the Evaluation Report, and the manufacturer has documented and effectively implemented a quality system to meet all requirements of the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Quality Documentation (AC10). more>>
