ICC and ICC-ES Share Optimistic Outlook for 2014

 

With the start of the new year, the International Code Council (ICC) and ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) are optimistic about the progress and developments within ICC-ES that are aimed at improving the process for each manufacturer. "Every manufacturer that ICC-ES provides services to is important," said ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian. "And as we hope you have noticed, ICC-ES staff is making great strides in efforts to improve the speed of issuing reports, reducing costs and improving overall customer service." ICC-ES Issues New EPA Seal and Insulate with ENERGY STAR Certifications

The ICC Evaluation Service, a recognized Certification Body for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Seal and Insulate with ENERGY STAR program, has issued EPA certification supplements to The Dow Chemical Company (ESR-3228) and Johns Manville (ESR-3398). Products receiving the EPA certification are The Dow Chemical Company's FROTH-PAK Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation and Johns Manville AP Foil-Faced Sheathing. The EPA Seal and Insulate Program requires independent, third-party testing and certification by technical evaluation providers such as ICC-ES. Continue reading story.


ICC, ICC-ES Receive Outstanding Support and Recognition at IBS/KBIS

The International Code Council and ICC-ES, supporting organizations of the first-ever "Design & Construction Week" event in Las Vegas Feb. 4-6, received outstanding support and recognition for their work from code officials and manufacturers alike while attending the shows. The International Builders' Show (IBS) co-located with NKBA's Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) for this inaugural event. The combined shows reached 70,000+ residential construction and design professionals with a combined total of 1,500 exhibitors and more than 600,000 square feet of exhibits. Continue reading story


In Memoriam: Code Council Mourns Loss of One of Its "Giants"

Billy R. Manning (pictured right), PE, the former Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) Director of Engineering and Education and President of the National Evaluation Service, passed away Jan. 10. Manning served as President of SBCCI's Public Safety Testing and Evaluation Services, Inc., during his 25-year career with the legacy organization. He was a former chairman of the National Hurricane Conference and a longtime member of the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioned Engineers. Continue reading story.



February Evaluation Committee Considers Proposed Revisions to Acceptance Criteria

The ICC-ES Evaluation Committee met Feb. 11 in Los Angeles to consider revisions to several existing criteria. Their discussions included topics ranging from Acceptance Criteria for Special Roofing Systems, Vinyl Siding, and Rim Board Products to High-strength Steel Reinforcing Bars. ICC-ES Evaluation Committee meetings are open to the public with no registration required. Those who could not attend were able to view the meeting during the live webcast. Marino\WARE, ES Strengthen Relationship with New Listing/Evaluation Reports

ICC-ES recently issued a new listing to Marino/WARE (ESL-1005) for diamond mesh and self-furred diamond mesh 2.5# and 3.4# and V-groove mesh in 2.5# and 3.4#, which conform to ASTM C847-09, Specification for Metal Lath and are in compliance with the specified sections of the 2012 International Building Code and the 2012 International Residential Code. In addition to ESL-1005, Marino/WARE holds multiple ICC-ES Evaluation Reports that are current to the 2012 I-Codes. Companies offering lines such as Marino\WARE's structural steel framing products benefit tremendously from having their products evaluated by ICC-ES. Read more


ICC and ICC-ES Technical Staff Attend Northridge 20 Symposium

Through cooperation between ICC Government Relations and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), Steve Ikkanda, ICC Senior Staff Engineer and Ping Cheng, ICC-ES Staff Engineer attended the Northridge 20 Symposium January 16–17 at the University of California, Los Angeles. The symposium was held on the 20th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake that caused many deaths, thousands of injuries and billions of dollars in damage. More than 600 people attended the symposium. The plenary speakers included Pete Wilson, former Governor of California from 1991 to 1999, James Lee Witt, former FEMA Director and International Code Council CEO, and many other seismology experts. ICC-ES Staff Active in Industry

Steven R. Thorsell, AIA, CSI, Manager of ICC-ES Environmental Programs was re-elected in December to serve another three-year term on the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Board of Direction. BETEC is a voluntary membership council of the National Institute of Building Sciences, which is charged with encouraging optimum energy use of buildings through a better understanding of how overall, complex building components interact with each other and with the environment. Thorsell has been a member since 1999 and served on the Board since 2004. Continue reading story


Meng Earns Professional Engineering License and Promotion

Qiaoli Meng, a Product Review Engineer for the ICC-ES Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) program, in the ICC-ES Whittier Calif., office, prepared for several months to take the Professional Engineer's (PE) exam. Meng completed a two-month-long PE preparation class, which consisted of training seven hours per day on Saturdays and Sundays plus additional hours of study every other day of the week. All of his work and dedication culminated when he took the PE exam and passed. He has since received a PE license and now holds the title of Staff Engineer. Continue reading story
